Gov. Hogan pushes back on claim states in 'good shape' for coronavirus response

The governor of Maryland pushed back against President Donald Trump's claim at his latest briefing that states are in "good shape" with ventilators and protective equipment.

Republican Gov. Larry Hogan acknowledged that states are better off than they were a few weeks ago, but "I think to say that everybody's completely happy and that we have everything we need -- it's not quite accurate," he said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday.

"Everybody still has tremendous needs on personal protective equipment and ventilators and all of these things that you keep hearing about," he added. "Everybody's fighting to find these things all over the all over the nation and all over the world."

"Right now, the first thing is saving lives and keeping people safe," he told "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. He also said he agreed with a recent report by former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, which said that the U.S. would need to be able to process 750,000 coronavirus tests a week before the country could reopen.

1. I don't think 750,000 a week is anywhere near enough to reopen the country.

Even 750,000 a day is a bit weak.
There are a lot of people, first responders, health care workers, food handlers, teachers, etc., that need to be tested on a regular basis.

And, I think we need the capacity to monitor for breakouts before they get out of hand. We also need to do widespread testing to get a picture of how the virus spread, and to what extent it has penetrated into the population at large, and to find carriers who have the disease, are infectious, but show no symptoms.

In a nation of 325 million people, that will require several million tests per day.

Only doing 750,000 tests a week will not allow us to see what is really going on out there.
It certainly won't be enough to insure its safe for people who come into contact with large numbers of people to get back to work.

What amazes me is how we could be so far into this pandemic, and still only have about 2 million people tested. It's a national disgrace...a result of the abject failure by the Trump Administration to lead the nation through this crisis.

We can't afford to have this bumbling idiot in charge for another 4 years.

The key is the resources and infrastructure to identify and isolate hot spots. We don't have that yet. We're no where even close to having that yet. And it's not just having the ability...It will take weeks and a massive effort to isolate existing hot spots BEFORE we let our guard down. Returning to any semblance of normality without that will quickly put us back to square one, with Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Nashville, Atlanta or Charlotte going up in viral flames. Are these people....and I mean the intelligentsia at CDC, not Donnie Body Bag's henchmen....studying what South Korea, Japan, Taiwan are doing with respect to identify and isolate? Apparently not.
