New York and other East Coast states extend shutdown of nonessential businesses to May 15

Source: CNBC

New York and other East Coast states are extending their shutdown of nonessential businesses to May 15 as officials grapple with how to reopen parts of the economy without leading to a resurgence in coronavirus cases, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.

Cuomo announced the news at a press conference in Albany and via Twitter, saying “New York on PAUSE” will be extended in coordination with other states.

“We have to continue doing what we’re doing. I’d like to see that infection rate get down even more. The New York Pause policies, the close-down policies, will be extended in coordination with other states to May 15,” Cuomo said. The lockdown was previously scheduled to lift on April 30.

He reiterated his plans to work with other governors on a coordinated plan to gradually reopen commerce in the region. Cuomo is leading a working group of seven governors from the Northeast, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Delaware, who are coordinating their response to the pandemic.

Sure it's expensive to be shutdown, but we may see the curve flattened in blue states and peaked in rural red states that don't have the hospital ICU capacity to deal with it.

DC/MD/VA might do the same as these other blue states.

DC closed through May 15

We can't measure anything without actual reporting of facts. Red states could be 5 times worse than Blue by October, but if the information is not publicly available, and if the Trump Administration denies the facts or won't tell us or invents their own or allows Fox and Hannity to paint the picture ........ no one may know about it. They'll even say look how much better off red states are vs blue without all those restrictions - Democrats are coming for your freedom.

We must fight this pandemic publicly, out in the open. It's a war of the truth vs Trump/Fox.

Fairly confident that physical school will be cancelled until September. Hoping the federal government comes through and helps school districts along with every other government entity. Well at least one of the districts I work in will have the construction and asbestos mitigation done by then.

He’s going to begin opening things back up on May 1. Said it will be done systematically and with caution. I say he caved. I’m so disappointed. He’s done a stellar job so far. I have to give him credit for that, but I was truly hoping he’d follow suit with the governors that are extending the stay at home orders. DeWine stated that he’d say more next week about opening the schools. He wants to meet with school superintendents before he makes that call. He will not issue an order to require wearing a mask but instead strongly recommends that everyone going out wears one. It’s the right thing to do, he says. We all see how well that works. Businesses are to make provisions for their employees and customers safety with hand sanitizer and masks for employee wear. I for one will not be going to retail stores, small businesses, restaurants etc. I just don’t feel good about this.

We dodged a bullet here. My son goes to a county STEM school focusing on Marine Biology, but his extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, dances, etc) are at the home school. His school followed science, and closed a week earlier than the state guidelines suggested, but he’s in the theater department at the local school and they were in the middle of a very costly production when they had to shut down. The yahoos around here were pissed about the show, so called the kids in at 5pm Friday night to tape the show for local tv. Two days later, one of the kids was in ICU. Our first official case. Somehow, the other kids (a cast of almost 100! And this town is SMALL!) were okay. We waited very nervously. No tests here, so we didn’t know if he was a carrier, and I had just undergone a chemo treatment. They’d better think really hard about reopening the schools.
