According to a report from Politico, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), as well as other Republican higher-ups, are fearful of losing their Senate majority in the November election with the Democrats about to put forward a strong slate of candidates backed by cash-rich warchests.
As Politicos James Arkin wrote, Republicans started this election cycle as heavy favorites to keep their Senate majority, with a lineup of elections mostly in red-tinted states and GOP incumbents favored over a slate of relatively unknown and untested challengers. Now, nearly six months out from the election, Democrats are making them sweat.
Noting that Republicans are likely to maintain their majority, which currently stands at 53-47 in their favor, the party has more seats to defend this election cycle which has been volatile due to the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump who is proving to be a drag on some incumbents campaigns and the coronavirus pandemic.
According to McConnell ally Steven Law, who is president of the super PAC Senate Leadership Fund, Republicans have their work cut out for them.

(22,112 posts)is collapsing and they are worried about their tax cuts? IDIOTS. They, along w/ trump, have done enough. They all need to resign and go away.
The screw up by trump of the oil markets is going to hurt a lot oil states, many in the West, TX, and other states where republicans formerly held sway. Not anymore as the royalty checks dry up, and the markets all around them collapse.
Nice work!

(14,708 posts)Its labeled impeach and convict.
But they have it securely hidden away under lock and key in a mayonnaise jar under funk and wagnells porch.
They would sooner have a b&d session with Pelosi as the dominatrix with a livestream on pornhub.
Actually, they might like that last bit quite a bit. Strike that.

(14,570 posts)to absolutely crush the Republican party at the polls in November, impose a massive redistribution of wealth through a revision of our entire tax code, and then systematically reverse every policy measure the Republicans have put forward in the last five decades.

(14,570 posts)wishy-washy about public messaging. Dems have seldom been good at that, and we need to get BETTER in a big way with talking points. Hate to say it, but we do.

(7,518 posts)Mitch's better strategy would have been to throw Trump under the bus during the impeachment and ran his senators on the coattails of a President Pence. Fortunately for us, he didn't. Now we just need to work hard to reap the reward.

(8,810 posts)They could get all the mileage out of him they can, throw him under the Bus, tell everyone "they" saw the problem and corrected it, Run Pence and some choice asshole as VP and keep all the votes that were abandoning ship and going to vote for the Dem candidate.....

(14,563 posts)The reality is that over the course of more than a quarter century the GOP and their conservative media counterparts have brainwashed their "base" to the point where they have been completely removed from reality and reason, and are addicted like crack addicts to outrage, and that while he is a bumbling dipshit, the one master skill that 45 has is channeling the worst nature of human beings.
He now owns that base, like when Daenerys Targaryen took the whip from the slavers (Game of Thrones reference).
The fact is, their best play as the political scumbags they are, is to do what they have done and ride 45 for better or for worse, because if they would have voted to convict him he would have turned their base on them, the party would have been ripped apart and with their base turned against them they would have definitely had much bigger loses in November.
As sad as it is, they have a much better chance to hold on to power to do the base play, have their lunatic base turnout in full support, try to gin up enough bullshit to stink Joe Biden and our senate and house candidates and let their voter suppression and gerrymandering work.

(391 posts)The Pence idea assumes that Mitch feels he's up against a wall with nothing to lose but he really doesn't care about the WH, he cares about the senate. He feels that even if Trump loses he can destroy any democrat president if he needs to, maybe he's right maybe he's wrong but it's a simple principle, keep the senate at all costs. In his mind the worst that could happen with Trump is that he gets re-elected and gets crazier and crazier. At that point Mitch just replaces him with Pence with the help of the dems. In other words Trump is a very useful idiot just like Pence would be so he has his backup idiot in place.

(14,563 posts)there is an opportunity for this kind of big win now.
Dems have to aggressively get out in front of and counter the bullshit that 45 and the Rs are going to start throwing out once they can get past the C-19 lockdown, and we have to somehow find a way to have EVERY LAST PERSON of reason and decency cast votes in November.
THEN, get behind Joe Biden and support him, cause no matter how big we might win, they WILL NOT just go home and give up. They will come back around like they did on BHO with the media eagerly giving whatever bullshit they are spewing a platform.
This country has to accept that they are completely dishonest and wild eyed crazies, and that we have a civic duty to come out at every election and fend them off.

(4,742 posts)Assume Doug Jones will lose in AL. That puts Dems at 46.
Likely upshots are
1. Maine - Collins loses
2. Colorado - Gardner loses
3. Arizona - McSally loses
4. NC - Tillis loses
That puts Dems at 50. That would require Biden to win for the Dems to have the Senate control.
Even if the Dems win those 4 seats and we have a 50-50 tie (better than 53-47) but it still means the republicans and Mitch control.
So either the Dems need one more Dem to win the Senate then the four mentioned and Trump wins to control the Senate or we need to make sure we win these four seats and Biden Wins.
I see no way that the Dems lose the House this year.
