States rushing to reopen are likely making a deadly error, coronavirus models and experts warn

By the end of the week, residents in Georgia will be able to get their hair permed and nails done. By Monday, they will be cleared for action flicks at the cineplex and burgers at their favorite greasy spoon.
And it will almost certainly lead to more novel coronavirus infections and deaths.
As several states including South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida rush to reopen businesses, the sudden relaxation of restrictions will supply new targets for the coronavirus that has kept the United States largely closed down, according to experts, math models and the basic rules that govern infectious diseases.
The math is unfortunately pretty simple. Its not a matter of whether infections will increase but by how much, said Jeffrey Shaman, a leading epidemiologist at Columbia University.

Here is the thing. Trump has screwed this up so much that it really does not matter at this point when States lift their stay at home orders. Even California is going to lift its stay at home order in the next few weeks.
The problem is that due to lack of testing, even after the formal stay at home orders are lifted, will I suddenly run out and go to restaurants, movie theaters or shop? No way unless there is a vaccine and people stop dying.
Who knows? Trump will then blame the fact that people are voluntarily hunkered down on the deep state, Democrats and the media, but most people do not want to die save for the Texas Lieutenant Governor who is willing to die of COVID-19 for his kids' 401(k) account.
You just can't trust Trump or Republicans, particularly since they have shown a great willingness to fire officials who tell the truth.

(628 posts)Have not heard California is considering reopening in a few weeks.
Here is what I have heard:
No large gatherings/events for years
Cautiously optimistic CA flattened the curve
Considering what businesses can open safely first. No date set as to when, or what businesses that would be.
California opened 2 closed hospitals and the hospitals are now open
California made a deal to secure a billion n95 masks for healthcare workers.
California needs more testing to safely reopen.
? What did you hear that I missed ?

(17,382 posts)...then today announced testing availability for even asymptomatic people, which he had previously announced as a necessary condition. So, compare his factors with him checking them off, and the stay at home order will probably be lifted in a few weeks unless there is another spike.

I think this is the way it should work. List your metrics ahead of time, then open up once those metrics are satisfied. It is transparent and far more objective then the Orange Magic 8 Ball who likes to surprise people and contradict himself.
