US promises Colombia 'critical resources' to confront coronavirus pandemic

Source: Colombia Reports

by Adriaan Alsema April 24, 2020

US President Donald Trump agreed to send medical aid to Colombia to help confront the coronavirus crisis, the White House and President Ivan Duque said Thursday.

In his daily Facebook Live transmission, Duque said he had a “friendly conversation” with his US counterpart in which the two “primarily expressed our solidarity.”

According to the president, Trump confirmed that US authorities would “provide us with access to any type of equipment that is important for dealing with” the contingency of the virus.

Specifically, Colombia would be receiving ventilators that are crucial to treat patients suffering respiratory illnesses, said Duque.

Trump, how about sharing some of the ventilators with hospitals still in need throughout your OWN COUNTRY?

buying a golf resort down there (if he doesn't already have one) to escape to when he is a wanted man. Looks like the US has no extradition agreement with them.

He's using "his" stockpile in various quid-pro-quos. One of his family toadys already slipped and referred to the federal inventory of hijacked medical supplies as "ours."

the supplies for? He took them illegally from shipments that were paid for by US governors. A shipment landed in Chicago, and was immediately seized by agents, who took the supplies to a warehouse. WHO is in charge? US hospitals are in dire need. Charity begins at home. Send Ivanka over there, let her start a sweatshop or two, making supplies and profits.

Meanwhile health care professionals are resorting to Gofundme to try to obtain PPE.

It's all about who will owe him a favor in the future.

13. At this point we probably have an excess of ventilators.

Unless wave 2 is much bigger.

All the talk early on about needing so many additional 10s of thousands of ventilators turned out to be reading the worst-case scenarios of projections that themselves turned out to be incorrect. Panic sells, screaming fire gets people's attention. It may have been "fact" and "science" but it was simply wrong. (In fact, whoever declares models to be "fact" really needs to return to pre-AP high school science classes or at least have their kids who took pre-AP science fill them on the difference between a model or hypothesis and actual facts, whatever his/her elected office. It's an embarrassment.)

With the realization that there are quite likely non-ventilator-based ways to treat many patients, with the added benefit that it results in fewer corpses, the surplus increased. And yet we're cranking them out because they're essential and in short supply. It's like Opus--you place the contract for 200 Ronco turnip twaddlers, you're sort of stuck with the 200 Ronco turnip twaddlers.

Yes, we hear talk of them being shipped. 100 here, 400 there. A company refurbished 500 of them and an order for 300 was turned back. What you haven't heard are reports of more than an incidental so-and-so died because of no ventilator. All the shortages were absolute fact in the sense that they were predicted but didn't actually happen. Even some of the deaths attributed to emergency room shortages described people waiting in the ER not for a bed but to be seen. That's a staff shortage. (And, even with ventilators there have been staff shortages. Note that Cuomo complained early, but about 3-4 days before peak said he had enough and shortly after that said he'd gotten everything he needed, at least in that regard.)

If you have a wry sense of humor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_models_are_wrong is LMFAO hilarious.
