Trump tells governors to 'seriously consider and maybe get going' on opening schools

Source: CNN

(CNN)President Donald Trump on Monday urged the nation's governors to "seriously consider" reopening schools as part of his push to restart the economy, though many states have already recommended against resuming the school year.

"Some of you might start thinking about school openings, because a lot of people are wanting to have school openings. It's not a big subject, young children have done very well in this disaster that we've all gone through," Trump told the governors on a teleconference call, according to audio of the call obtained by CNN.

He continued, "So a lot of people are thinking about the school openings. And I think it's something, Mike (Pence), they can seriously consider and maybe get going on it."

But this late in the school year, it's unlikely that many students will return to the classrooms in the immediate future.

I’ve got a 4.0 high school student who is suffering through remote learning that’s a shit show here. He misses school horribly. He’s an only child so school is his social life too. Nobody wants school to open more than I do...for the sake of my kiddo’s mental health...but no. School should not reopen this term.

My wife is teaching from home. She and her colleagues put together bi-weekly packets to send home and she's constantly e-mailing/texting the 23 families--plus her colleagues and administrative staff. The finished packets get returned when they pick up the new ones. Three days later, my wife safely picks up the finished ones and begins the correcting/grading process.

All of the faculty is collecting the same pay and benefits as usual. And EVERYONE IS STAYING HEALTHY. (And the schools are the safest they've been in over 20 years.)

Hasn't the orange bastard killed enough already?

Pay each teacher $5 per hour times the number of students each day. (23 students X $5 X 7 hours X 180 days = $144,900 per year)

$144,900 is $30,000 less than the base pay for a Congressperson. Since ALEC writes the GOP legislation that our elected unskilled labor endorses, the newly elevated teacher pay is still a bargain, although not quite enough to risk getting shot for.

The new salary would at least allow the teachers to drive better cars than the h.s. students do.

... this is Democratic Underground, where all the kids and all the parents are above average.

Other kids, parented by members of Free Republic and Jackpine Radicals, may be burdened by less-qualified home-school-parents.

Having the schools opened As-Soon-As-Safe will help many kids, academically and nutritionally.

Trump is a dunce, but opening schools is a good goal. I hope they can open in September at least.

I can just imagine parents with little to no science education trying to teach their kids HS Chem, of Classical Physics, or computer science theory, etc.
Or seniors, pre-calc. Those kids need teachers with direct access. Yes, there are some particularly bright or diligent students that will be OK. That's a small fraction of the whole.

He did not say 2-3% of kids. He says 2-3% mortality. That's of the US population!
The midpoint of that results in 8.3 million dead.
Your pick has to be 1 out of every 40 people, at any age, everywhere in the US!
He's out of his mind.
8+ million dead is OK, per the quack Oz.
