WASHINGTON (AP) -- Anxious for an economic recovery, President Donald Trump prepared to field Americans' questions about decisions by some states to allow nonessential businesses to reopen while other states are on virtual lockdown due to the coronavirus.
After more than a month of being cooped up at the White House, Trump returned from a weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland and planned to participate in a "virtual" town hall, hosted Sunday night by Fox News Channel, from inside the Lincoln Memorial.
"Hopefully our Country will soon mend," Trump tweeted. Federal guidelines that encouraged people to stay at home and practice social distancing expired late last week.
Debate continued over moves by governors to start reopening state economies that tanked after shopping malls, salons and other nonessential businesses were ordered closed in attempt to slow a virus that has killed more than 66,000 Americans, according to a tally of reported deaths by Johns Hopkins University.

(12,712 posts)Just how do we mend, brave a crisis and recover from it with THAT acting as President as if the real one had been abducted and replaced by something from the depths of Hell?
A grim marauder for disease and death doesn't inspire me, it demoralizes, destroys hope and foments pessimism.
I would rather listen to gorillas mating than that, self-congratulatory, egomaniacal nonsense that is akin to Jim Jones telling his followers they have to drink the Kool-Aid NOW. Only this time, its somebody pretending to be a President of the country. That's just as frightening as the ravages of COVID-19.
A real leader would not inspire this kind of response from me, regardless of what party he was affiliated with.

(3,527 posts)GW Bush put out that message to America the other day. Now, I hated GW at the time, not too impressed with him now, and that cheerleading stunt at the World Trade Center never convinced me for one second that he was a real leader, but at least the video he just put out struck the right tone, sounded presidential and actually kind of moved me a bit. So what does dump do? He goes and shits all over it. tRump couldnt sound pResidential with a year of acting lessons, and more to the point, he doesnt even bother to try.

(16,984 posts)There was that time when Peter Alexander of CNN asked Trump what he'd say to people who were scared about the COVID-19 pandemic. I can't think a single president of my lifetime who would have produced Trump's response, which was to attack Alexander as a reporter. Seriously, who on earth does things like that? All Trump would've had to do was say that he understood things were difficult and it was an unfamiliar situation, but that researchers were working and in the meantime we needed to take precautions. That's all. That's bland.
That's what Trump couldn't produce, but he did manage the bile. Again, who on earth pulls stunts like that as thousands die?

(3,527 posts)Or perhaps, even worse, because of it. He is a horrible human being who brings out the worst in people. Even the feeling I have when considering him are not ones I enjoy having. I want to be inspired, not repulsed. I want to love, not hate. He is a cancer on the soul of humanity. He and his followers and his supporters are the worst of what humanity has to offer.

(16,296 posts)This stinks of 2016 when the press was hawking him every day. Now, a 2 hr. nonsense with Fox as the host (and you can bet EVERY other news outlet will cover it too) pitching soft-balls at him and I expect the statue of Abe will be illuminated in the background as he babbles.
Damn, they should deny usage of that monument for political purposes.
