Report: China hid coronavirus' severity to hoard supplies

Source: MSNBC

The analysis states that, while downplaying the severity of the coronavirus, China increased imports and decreased exports of medical supplies. It attempted to cover up doing so by “denying there were export restrictions and obfuscating and delaying provision of its trade data,” the analysis states.

The report also says China held off informing the World Health Organization that the coronavirus “was a contagion” for much of January so it could order medical supplies from abroad — and that its imports of face masks and surgical gowns and gloves increased sharply.

Trump has speculated that China could have unleashed the coronavirus due to some kind of horrible “mistake.” His intelligence agencies say they are still examining a notion put forward by the president and aides that the pandemic may have resulted from an accident at a Chinese lab.

Speaking Sunday on ABC's “This Week," Pompeo said he had no reason to believe that the virus was deliberately spread. But he added, “Remember, China has a history of infecting the world, and they have a history of running substandard laboratories.”

Wow, this is just getting more and more racist. China was aware that it had an epidemic in January, which most folks figured out when they put Wuhan on lockdown, so they started hoarding medical supplies. What a conspiracy!

Oh, and the Chinese have "a history of infecting the world," which is sort of like how before 2018, Republicans were saying Mexicans carried disease, which is why Trump declared a national emergency to block the border.

I guess I can understand that if you prepare for a possible epidemic, Trump would find that to be totally wrong, since he ignored intelligence reports through late last year and did nothing to prepare for the coronavirus.

In fact, on page 14 of the the Obama administration's briefing to Trump's team, it says to prepare for key shortages of medical equipment.

Maybe if Trump watched NPR and not Fox News, then he would have known that millions of Chinese were put on quarentine in mid-January. But, because it is not on Fox, Trump thinks China was hiding an epidemic.

https://www.npr.org/2020/01/23/798789671/chinese-authorities-begin-quarantine-of-wuhan-city-as-coronavirus-cases-multiply

Wuhan's public health authorities say they are in a "state of war" as they quarantine the Chinese city in an attempt to halt the spread of a never-before-seen strain of coronavirus.

"Strictly implement emergency response requirements, enter into a state of war and implement wartime measures to resolutely curb the spread of this epidemic," urged a committee of Wuhan's top officials. "Homes must be segregated, neighbors must be watched."

Later Thursday, health officials from the World Health Organization decided not to declare the outbreak an international health emergency. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that after two days of meetings in Geneva with the organization's Emergency Committee, the group was divided.

"Make no mistake. This is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency," Tedros said. "It may yet become one."

How is saying the chinese have a history of infecting the world different from Trump's prior statements that Mexican immigrants bring disease? Now, if you don't think either statement is racist, well I do not know what to say.

It is an infectious disease. It does not have a nationality. Yet, Republicans like to paint non-white groups as "having a history of infecting the world."

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/06/donald-trump-mexican-immigrants-tremendous-infectious-disease

Donald Trump: Mexican migrants bring 'tremendous infectious disease' to US

Donald Trump launched another attack on Mexico on Monday – this time accusing Mexicans of being responsible for “tremendous infectious disease … pouring across the border”.

The would-be president and billionaire businessman, who has already branded Mexican immigrants to the US as criminals, drug dealers and rapists, accused the Mexican government of “forcing their most unwanted people into the United States” which has become a “dumping ground for Mexico”.

“The worst elements in Mexico are being pushed into the United States by the Mexican government,” Trump said in a statement he released on Monday, which criticised the media for deliberately distorting his earlier remarks.

“The largest suppliers of heroin, cocaine and other illicit drugs are Mexican cartels that arrange to have Mexican immigrants trying to cross the borders and smuggle in the drugs. The border patrol knows this. Likewise, tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the border. The United States has become a dumping ground for Mexico and, in fact, for many other parts of the world.”

The plague of Justinian most likely originated in Western China though I’m not clear on whether that would have been considered China back then.
The Black Death originated in Wuhan.
The Third Plague (1855) originated in Yunnan, China.
SARS 2003.
Hong Kong flu 1968
Asian Flu 1956-1968 originated in Guizhou, China

Of course, swine flu was American, the 1918-9 pandemic was American...and arguably the worst of all - the smallpox came from Europe into the New World.

does that mean I'm racist against Arabs?

If I were to say that, I assure you I'd not be saying it because I am racist against Arab people.

Xenophobia is a probably a reasonable accusation in this current instance.

A claim of racism in this case is ... tenuous at best.

IMHO.

It does not have a nationality. It does not hold a passport. This reminds me of folks justifying their hate of gay men based on AIDS when they just happened to be the most prominent victims.

This is why Trumps's scapegoating works. There is a reason why so many people watch Fox. They confirm the biases and hate many people hold of immigrants and minorities.

Just because a person says another country's government has f***ed up in some way, it doesn't necessarily indicate 'racism'.

Kinda like my KSA example. Or, if I were to castigate in some way Israel's government for it's treatment of Palestinians, it doesn't mean I'm racist against Jewish people.

It MIGHT be that. But it's not proof thereof.

Your last paragraph is of course true.

But doesn't establish racist intent other than as a means of manipulating the rubes.

This is really just about making Trump look like 'not the guilty party'. China is a convenient scapegoat (what, with the disease having apparently started there), but I doubt it's because of 'racism' particularly.

The fact that it lets IQ45's people throw around 'Communist Party' at will is very handy for them, I'd add.

Now, if Pompeii had said like 'the dirty yellow man brought this plague to our shores, we need to expel them all!' ... then I'd be 100% with you.

That is what is racist sort of like Trump generally blaming Mexican immigrants for bringing disease to the US.

I think everyone agrees that China's three week delay was a fact up. Of course, Trump doubled down on that with a three month delay of his own where he repeatedly insisted that he had it under control.

So, if you agree that the Pompeo's statement broadly blaming China as being the source of disease as being racist, but also acknowledging that China messed up with its three week delay, then we are saying the same thing.

Because he said China, I don't think one can say with certainty that 'racism' is the driving force behind his statement.

Could it be? Of course it could. It's probably even likely.

But because he criticized the country as opposed to the race ... I'm not prepared to assert it *must* be racist in intent. Especially when it appears to be a generally fairly factual statement insofar as lot of pandemics having started there over the years (including the present one).

You can though

Anything that goes wrong is always someone else's fault. We are blessed to have him as president at this time of our country's greatest need. He should continue in office without elections until our country's crises are over. (Actually, he thinks he deserves two more years added onto this term.)

And what about Hillary's emails? Ultimately, weren't they directly responsible for the pandemic?
