Tens of thousands of ballots that arrived after Election Day were counted, thanks to court decisions
Early last month, voters in Wisconsin navigated a dizzying number of rule changes governing the states spring elections as officials tussled over the risks of the novel coronavirus, prompting a backlog of absentee ballot requests and fears that many would not be able to participate.
But in the end, tens of thousands of mail ballots that arrived after the April 7 presidential primaries and spring elections were counted by local officials, a review by The Washington Post has found the unexpected result of last-minute intervention by the U.S. Supreme Court.
In Milwaukee and Madison alone, the states two largest cities, more than 10 percent of all votes counted, nearly 21,000 ballots, arrived by mail after April 7, according to data provided by local election officials.
The surprising outcome after warnings that many Wisconsinites would be disenfranchised amid the pandemic was the result of a largely unexamined aspect of the courts decision that temporarily changed which ballots were counted. Because of the order, election officials for the first time tallied absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day, rather than just those received by then underscoring the power of narrow court decisions to significantly shape which votes are counted.

(26,281 posts)After all its harder to rig an election if all the voters can vote and all the votes are counted.

(32,626 posts)I do remember an election...God only knows which one...where there were bags of votes found at a post office..and other such things. There's always a way, I guess, but there's plenty of smart people out there who can figure out ways to limit the opportunities....but the states that need to listen, don't want to hear it. Stealing elections is a do or die for them.

We can curl up into a ball, and die.
We can fight for our lives, and live.
I choose the later. Fight like hell, and never give up. Your life depends on it. My life, also depends on fighting - and that is what I intend to do.

(1,606 posts)The lesson to them: ballots must be RECEIVED by such-and-such a date. Most certainly they will close the door on the "largely unexamined aspect of the courts decision that temporarily changed which ballots were counted."
This is one "fix" that assuredly will be in.
Democratic voters must be encouraged to VOTE EARLY!!
On second thought, I'm probably much too skeptical; surely we can rely on the honesty of Republicans to embrace the full totality of democracy and the sanctity of the vote. After all, they are very good people.
