Trump Expresses Wish That Women Reporters at White House Were More Like '50s Housewives

President Donald Trump has singled out two “angry” women reporters and suggested that he wished they acted more like demure housewives from the 1950s. In a wild interview with the New York Post, Trump complained that he found two female CBS News journalists—Weijia Jiang and Paula Reid—particularly irritating during his recent streak of coronavirus press briefings. “It wasn’t Donna Reed, I can tell you that,” Trump said, referring to the screen star best known for playing Mary Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life and starring as a TV housewife in the eponymous sitcom of the ’50s and ’60s. Trump went on: “Paula Reid, she’s sitting there and I say, ‘How angry. I mean, What’s the purpose?’ They’re not even tough questions, but you see the attitude of these people, it’s like incredible.” In response, Reid tweeted Tuesday morning: “President Trump tells @nypost I am nothing like 50’s American archetypal mom Donna Reed. Fact-check: True.” For her part, Jiang responded “The President told me to be ‘nice and easy’ three out of the last four times I asked him a question.”

I don't know if you are old enough to remember Norman Cousins, editor of the Saturday Review.

Around 40 years ago he developed a brain tumor, and his prognosis was 2 or 3 months. He decided to spend his remaining time watching Marx Brothers movies and enjoying himself.

He survived for several years. Seize the day!

May 2020

While reading through the snippet at Daily Beast I wondered if his statements was just part of a show. I did not think he actually loved getting into confrontation with the female reporters, but I did wonder if he was making those comments partly to excite his base. However, it is very possible that female reporters asking him questions really bothers him.

Envy. He is so exhausted from trying to live up to his Trumpian expectations of being Trump, that he envies people with more ordinary lives because they don't have that burden.

Donna Reed was not Donna Stone and wanted more socially relevant issues scripted into her hit '50s and '60s TV show, according to her son.

Reed was devoted to family and left her work at the studio, Owen said. Her involvement in Another Mother for Peace, the 1967 anti-Vietnam War organization she co-founded, reflected her interest in national and world affairs and showed a side of her that surprised people who thought she was more like her TV character.
