Governor Abbott Modifies Coronavirus Executive Orders To Eliminate Confinement As Punishment
May 7, 2020 at 10:02 am
AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - After supporting the actions of a Dallas salon owner who was jailed for violating executive stay at home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Greg Abbott has now modified his executive orders and eliminated confinement as a punishment for violating the mandates.
Abbot's office issued a statement Thursday morning saying:
"Throwing Texans in jail who have had their businesses shut down through no fault of their own is nonsensical, and I will not allow it to happen," said Governor Abbott. "That is why I am modifying my executive orders to ensure confinement is not a punishment for violating an order. This order is retroactive to April 2nd, supersedes local orders and if correctly applied should free Shelley Luther. It may also ensure that other Texans like Ana Isabel Castro-Garcia and Brenda Stephanie Mata who were arrested in Laredo, should not be subject to confinement. As some county judges advocate for releasing hardened criminals from jail to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is absurd to have these business owners take their place."
The governor said the modifications are being applied retroactively.
Abbott was among those who chimed in Wednesday supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after called for the "immediate release" of salon owner Shelley Luther, who was jailed on contempt of court charges for disobeying a judge's temporary restraining order prohibiting her from operating her salon.
On Wednesday Abbott released a statement saying that jailing Texans for non-compliance with executive orders should always be the last available option.
The latest orders issued from the state allow for more businesses, like salons and barber shops, to reopen their doors on Friday, May 8.

(8,909 posts)She was jailed because she was in contempt of a court order and flaunted it.
This will allow others to give the middle finger to future court orders.
Let's just abide by the court orders we agree with.

How times have changed. I thought righties were the law and order party. And firm discipline. The Daddy Party. Guess not.

(2,195 posts)The local officials were simply obeying the law. The defendant was jailed for
contempt of court. The Guv is just like drumph in that he does not take responsibility
for his actions and seeks to blame others.
