Trump Signs Executive Order Greenlighting 'Corporate Takeover of Our Oceans While They Hope We Aren't Paying Attention'
"Trump is exploiting a public health crisis to help an industry known for pumping diseases and antibiotics into oceans."

President Donald Trump issued an executive order late Thursday that environmentalists warned will accelerate the corporate exploitation of oceans by relaxing regulations on and streamlining the construction of industrial offshore aquaculture facilities, which critics deride as "floating factory farms" that pump pollution and diseases into public waters.
The Don't Cage Our Ocean Coalition, which was formed to oppose ocean industrial fish farming, said in a statement that Trump's Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth "mandates federal agencies to craft a program for rapid authorization of industrial offshore aquaculture facilities, which use giant floating cages to cultivate finfish, allowing toxic pollution to flow into open waters."
Rosanna Marie Neil, policy counsel for Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance, a member of the coalition, said the Trump White House is "supporting the corporate takeover of our oceans while they hope we aren't paying attention."
Environmental attorney Marianne Cufone similarly accused Trump of exploiting the Covid-19 pandemic to "push through dangerous short-cuts to regulatory processes, while communities struggle to stay healthy, pay rent, and put food on the table."

(9,975 posts)He is too venal to care that he is destroying the environment for his own children and grandchildren and too stupid to understand the connection between ecological destruction and the ravages that Mother Nature will cause when we pass the tipping point on climate change. Hes doing his best to hasten the arrival of that tipping pointsolely listening to his billionaire friends who see profit for them and pollution and illness for everyone else as an acceptable tradeoff. I have never seen such blatant greed.

(714 posts)Don't cage our ocean is a front group for the fishing industry. They're currently preparing to host a gala "to give fishermen their time on the hill" and serving wild caught salmon.
Now, if you want to hear what SCIENTISTS think, and not a face group for diesel burning trawl netters, take a look at this;
https://caaquaculture.org/2019/05/13/rebutting-marine-aquaculture-myths-and-unfounded-criticisms/
"A peer-reviewed analysis reported that a global literature search found A total of 70 publications, spanning 1999 to 2016 used the term offshore aquaculture and were biologically focused .Notably, these studies concerned farms located in the USA, Spain or Germany and for those studies they summarized:
studies that focused on potential ecological impacts of offshore farms, although few (n = 17), tended to report no significant effect. Modeling the probability of a measurable impact based on these studies revealed a farm ecotone of ~90 m[eters]; beyond this distance, evidence of an environmental impact being extremely unlikely.
Farms must conform to federal regulations to efficiently feed optimal feed formulations, reduce feed loss, maintain feeding equipment, train employees in efficient feeding practices, and record feed efficiency (conversion of feed to the amount of fish produced).[8] In the U.S. farms must comply with strict discharge standards and are closely monitored against a set of environmental impact metrics. If they exceed those discharge standards or impact metrics their NPDES permits can be rescinded. Without a valid NPDES permit they must cease operations. "
~Edited to point out the rampant hypocrisy of serving a fish whose populations are falling 10-15% per year due to over fishing at a function where they refer to fleet fishing as "food security" and deride aquaculture.

It's how the work after any horrible crisis -- move in and find the profit centers. Look at PNAC and 9/11, look at Katrina. All corporate alliances with the GOP are foul, criminal, and monstrous. All corporate officers allied with the GOP deserve post-revolutionary justice.
The GOP needs to be destroyed -- maybe it can be rebuilt along less horrific lines, but it must first be utterly destroyed. Because it actively seeks ways to destroy all of us and the planet we live on.

(7,473 posts)I cannot express how disgusted with this man and his cohorts. What will we have left but a bunch of idiots trying to run a country that has gone to hell.
Does he ever think of anyone but himself? Not even his family and what they will face?
November cannot come soon enough if I live that long.
Old timers like me are hiding at home in fear that tomorrow will not come.
Several members of my family are in the medical profession. I worry about then but I worry about this country even more.
We are scorned by the world and yet this jerk still has followers. I am amazed at the stupidity of some of our citizens.
This jerk and his minions have to go. How the mighty have fallen.
Although I support Biden, I sure wish Cuomo was in the picture. We need a loud, profound voice and he seems to be the most vocal and accurate now. I know he does not want the job but we need him or a voice as loud and profound.
Please, Mr. Biden, start yelling, for all of us.

(12,582 posts)Trump, McConnell, and their minions are using the pandemic to trash the environment, pack the courts with unqualified ideologues, give more tax cuts to he rich, defund Social Security, attack Jeff Bezos by quadrupling Amazon's postal shipping costs, claim absolute power over the U.S. (he hasn't given up on that goal yet), push NASA to get his name on the moon, spend $500 million to paint Trump's ego-wall black, and on, and on. In the end, if Biden can overcome all of the voting obstacles the GOP is creating and becomes the 46th president, every single screw up Fat Donnie has caused will he laid at his feet, and the Repugs will use the huge national debt caused by the pandemic as a reason to reduce of eliminate nearly every social program.
