Edit: We intentionally sank one of our own with heavy firepower from all angles, even below. It took nearly a month to sink.

I was stationed aboard several carriers during my career in the Marines, they are very well protected and they have multiple back up systems for the back up system, the crews are very well trained in damage control.
I think you overestimate what the Iranian Navy can do, if even one cruise missile is detected headed towards one of our carriers, or even one of our ships, the Iranian Navy would cease to exist, and they know this.

(22,776 posts)bodies of those who underestimated their enemy. Historian Francis Pikes 2015 book Hirohitos War: The Pacific War, 19411945 suggests that the marine invasion of Tarawa was so costly due in part to the fact that "Americans bred on a diet of racist propaganda which depicted Japanese as 'short, bespectacled, bucktoothed' were taken by surprise when they saw what Imperial Japanese marines actually looked like. Often the first encounter was sudden, violent hand-to-hand combat with a six-foot-tall Rikusentai. These Japanese marines were crack shots and adept at close quarters fighting. They were good and we were pretty good, too, one soldier recalled in Pikes book. So it was two of probably the best military outfits in the war.
Every military force has its share of horrendous accidents. The demise of the USS Thresher comes to mind, for one. The recent collision by the USS John S. McCain and the USS Fitzgerald are another example. Would you judge our military by these incidents?
