New Mexico mandates masks in public, inside and outside, as state begins to reopen
Source: The Hill
New Mexico will require face coverings in all public spaces starting Saturday as the state moves forward with the first phase of its reopening plan, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) said Wednesday.
As the state opens up more and more and risk increases, the only way we save lives and keep the gating criteria where it is is if were all wearing face coverings, she said during a briefing. This is not something were used to or accustomed to and I just really want us to do the right thing.
The state is mandating everyone wear face coverings in indoor and outdoor public spaces. People exercising outdoors are exempt from the requirement.
Its not a guarantee against the virus, but it really helps slow the spread, and thats why were mandating it, the governor said.

Starting Saturday, retailers can operate at 25 percent capacity. Other non-essential businesses, such as office spaces and call centers, can also operate at 25 percent capacity but the order encourages employees to work from home wherever possible.
The order will also allow houses of worship to open with 10 percent capacity.

(111,245 posts)It's going to be a whole load of fun in triple digit heat.
My guess is that the cities will be mostly compliant. Rural areas will be less so, if only because there are fewer places to go and fewer places to get the masks.

(1,726 posts)They have been wearing masks and are complaining about the heat. It's just starting to warm up here and I can see what they are talking about. It's going to be a fun summer.

I guess next we'll have to see whether the "can't tell me" crowd shows up in force to protest the tyranny of wearing a mask.

(4,112 posts)My comment to our wonderful Governor has prompted many comments opposed to masks...claiming tyranny as you said. My husband is very excited and pleased...I'm concerned if folks here don't wear masks.

(11,296 posts)but ask some of these jokers if they think that wearing hard hats and steel-toed boots at the worksite is "tyranny." And then explain to me how that is "different." I'll wait.
"You get to decide whether or not you feel like wearing your hard hat at work today?"

I feel their feeble minds spinning and 200 no maskers showing up in New Mexico before the end of the week for that prized jackass photo op they are known for?

(35,300 posts)In any event, it pays to remember that they're actually people and not dehumanized "pigs". If the overall, cumulative infection rate is less than 2% that it means far more than 99% of the people you encounter are actually not infecting anybody because they're simply not infectious.
Even if 5% of the population had been exposed, the current infectious population is still really, really low.

(4,868 posts)But I'm not going to wear one when I'm running. I move into the streets or switch sides (you can do this too) when someone is coming in the opposite direction.

(11,296 posts)with your position .. and not the rant you're responding too. By far the most incidence of viral contraction is happening indoors. Outdoor settings, particularly with some distancing .. much, much less of a concern. You're doing good. (and some people aren't going to be satisfied unless you're in a haz-mat suit)

But the recommendations from that community on when masking is mandated, suggested, or deemed unnecessary have always been much more situational, tailored and nuanced to real life occasion than anything you would be interested in hearing. And .. not all of us live in downtown Gotham .. all the while appreciating that it might present a special set of problems. But your reaction to it seems .. a bit overwrought? In any event, you have a nice one, Blues.

(4,868 posts)I'm running on a street and pass maybe 10-15 people over 3 miles (from a distance of over 6 feet)
Also, my B.S. is in public health and my MPH in epidemiology. I'm quite capable of calculating the risks (of which are virtually zero).

(4,868 posts)Why do you assume my gender? Do you assume only men run? You have no idea what gender I identify with. Strange observation.
I don't wear a mask because running 1) It's not necessary 2) I enjoy the fresh air (again no one is around me) 3) I have an understanding of how the virus travels.
I'm not wearing a mask right now and I just sneezed from seasonal allergies. You might want to unplug your router and modem for 5 minutes just to be safe.

(3,051 posts)I understand the must-wear-mask-outside, if I still lived in NYC or Washington DC.
But my son (wisely) determined it was unsafe for me to live alone in NYC (because of racist attacks in our neighborhood), so he moved me to the middle of the woods in New Mexico, where the population density is . . . . I can see another house with binoculars down in the valley, if I can hold them steady.
The NYC (or even Sante Fe) rules-fits-all approach is silly.
When I go to town to the Wal-Mart, I wear a mask.
To re-purpose Yogi Berra's quote, the spread of Covid "depends on two factors: (1) the density of the population and (2) the density of the population." Factors 1 and 2 are not the same.
