Black delivery driver blocked into Oklahoma neighborhood by HOA president

Source: Fox 40

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A viral video shows a delivery driver being held against his will in an Oklahoma City area neighborhood Monday, blocked in by a man who identified himself as the homeowners association president.

Travis Miller, a home appliance and furniture delivery driver, captured the encounter on Facebook Live while driving through the neighborhood of Ashford Hills.

“I want to know where you’re going,” says the resident whose car is blocking Miller’s way.

...

“All we want to know is why you’re in here and who gave you the gate code. That’s all we need to know,” the man says.

Miller told sister station KFOR he did not want to share his customer’s personal information.

People buy the homes in the associations. They know what they're buying into. They know why they bought into a gated community.

That's why this HOA "president" had the attitude to harass the delivery driver.

It's not that home associations are inherently bad. It's that many of the people in them are bad.

First: In many places you cannot find a home that is not in a HOA, either because they are just pervasive or because the state itself requires a HOA as a condition for the subdivision to be built.

Second: The scum rises to the surface. Bullies and control freaks tend to end up in positions of control in these organizations because they want the power trip more than others just want to keep order.

I live in a non-HOA neighborhood in an affluent suburb which is now mostly HOA. Not long after I moved here there was a meeting about incorporating a HOA. I told them bluntly I'd burn the motherfucker down before I let it get drafted into a HOA, and I meant it.

Since I live in New York City, I'm more familiar with co-op boards than HOAs. They sound very similar, however, in their operations and personalities.

I also did not realize that HOAs were so pervasive. That's discouraging in many ways.

There are plenty of reports of HOA's putting liens on houses due to fining people for various things or for unpaid HOA dues. I read some articles the other day about several egregious cases. Examples like an HOA's put a lien on a house for something like $250 and when the owner finally agreed to pay the fine plus penalties the HOA got the house into foreclosure anyway.

HOAs establish rules that all homeowners agree to abide by; it helps maintain neighborhood property values.

Regarding the HOA president in the article, he sounds like a dick. I seriously doubt he has any authority designated in the HOA's bylaws to allow him to block the street and demand justification for the presence of a delivery person.

is because of an unwritten law barring African Americans from being inside their gated community? Surly they don't stop every delivery driver coming in & out. Common sense shows if a delivery truck is inside......some homeowner gave them the code, but these guys wanted to know who broke the unwritten rule. Bet they're republiCONS

I have a Property Owner's Association in my neighborhood, but we're not gated and no one has ever accosted a delivery driver, that I'm aware of. My gosh. People are going to have deliveries and contractors or repairmen working at their houses. Or landscapers or tree removal or any one of a thousand different things. Who has time to police everyone who drives through? Jesus.

My guess from the account in the article is that the cops called the employer, who probably gave them the customer's info, because "the customer came around" which was when the shithead moved his car. Probably because they really didn't want to charge the shithead with the felony false arrest he was committing. You have to wonder why nobody else needed to exit the subdivision while the gate was blocked by this drama. I'm betting the residents all knew who the shithead was and decided to avoid becoming involved.

People like this racist gob of phlegm are everywhere, assuming positions of authority by default and acting out their hatred whenever they get a chance. They are everywhere. I can't say they're in the minority, either. In many places, its the exact opposite But they used to have the decency to hang out in each others basements drinking beer and guffawing at coarse racist, sexist, and bigoted humor -- and leave the rest of us alone with our belief that America, though far from perfect, was at least struggling to live up to its ideals.

Thanks to Trump, I now know that 60,000,000 "Americans" believe those ideals are weak and pathetic distortions of the real rugged-individual-cum-fascist ideals that made America truly great once before when lynchings were viewed as social occasions, "Indians" were good only if dead, Jews were harassed as devil worshippers, and Catholics were all viewed as loyal only to the Pope in Rome. These rotten bastards, of course, always make exceptions for themselves, so Catholics and Jews, for example, voted for Trump and view him as a savior, just like the African Americans who appear, from time to time, to express their love for the man who would root them and their extended families out of their homes and country if he could.

And don't even broach the subject of our neighbors to the south, the Mexicans and Hondurans and El Salvadorans because our large fascist-leaning (if not actually saluting) fellow citizens understand them to be disease ridden inferiors, perhaps the result of racial mixing. 60 million Americans voted for the one man who could make America great by reinstating the racism, the xenophobic and religious bigotry of our gloried past.

America has a population that is almost half Trumpian -- and the only reason Trump is slowly losing their support is because they are starting to see themselves (screw all other people, they themselves) being injured by his loathsome incompetence. All 60 goddam million of them.

Sorry for the rant and I hope Mr. Miller contracts an incurable STD which he passes on to his neighbors.

until it happens to you, and then it's everything.

I'd sue for false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The tort of false imprisonment, at least in Cali, requires only a tiny obstruction of your movement. The idea that a stranger to you could actually shoot you for nothing is fearsome. You wouldn't know that he wasn't going to shoot you. And, there's that thing about "under the color of authority."

The father of one of my classmates when I still went to school in D.C. was a very witty, abrasive, outspoken journalist. My dad knew him quite well. As he was fairly successful at a fairly young age, he bought a house in an upscale area of Washington, D.C., one of the first black journalists to do so.

As he told it (and who knows if it really went down this way?), he was mowing his lawn one day when a fancy limousine rolled up and a well-dressed white lady called out to him. Carl (his name was Carl Rowan) came over, thinking maybe she was lost and wanted directions. Instead, she asked him how much he charged for mowing the lawn. According to Carl, usually known for his quick temper, he told the lady, "madam, I get to sleep with the lady of the house." Horrified, she took off like a bat out of hell.
