Senate Republicans issue first subpoena in Obama-era probes
Source: The Hill
Senate Republicans issued their first subpoena on Wednesday as part of wide-ranging investigations tied to the Obama administration.
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted along party lines to issue a subpoena for Blue Star Strategies, a firm with ties to Ukraine gas company Burisma Holdings.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), the chairman of the panel, has homed in the U.S firm as he probes Hunter Biden's work for Burisma Holdings, where Biden-the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee-was a member of the board until he stepped down in 2019.
The subpoena asks for records from Jan. 1, 2013, to the present of Blue Star strategies "related to work for or on behalf of Burisma Holdings or individuals associated with Burisma." He's also requesting an interview with top Blue Star officials to discuss the subpoena.

(25,111 posts)produce the records. The subpoena is a show, just like the need to attack Hunter Biden.
To be honest, I'm pretty sure they have all documents and records at hand. That is why t-rump and cronies needed to make up shit.
It's nothing there. Mind you, republicans will make up shit tho.

(52,196 posts)since republicans are investigating the previous administration, we'll have an easy retort when they whine about us investigating them once biden is president.
they'll say it's bad form or whatever for the party in power to investigate the previous one.
we'll be able to point out they have no leg to stand on after doing exactly that.
and of course, this is completely aside from the fact that democrats are only ever interested in investigating actual crimes, whereas republicans are only ever interested in smearing democrats.

(54,341 posts)The Democrats should keep a think and detailed file of all Republican actions in this matter, written and video, and use the phony accusations during the fall campaign for GOTV purposes. The message is, "if Republicans are wasting time, energy and money on prosecuting a popular former president they KNOW is innocent, what do you think they'll try to do to you when it's YOUR turn?"

(101,306 posts)We need to remind people that Republicans are pursuing partisan wild goose chases for electoral propaganda, when their constituents are dying. They could be passing the Democratic relief bill, rather than trying to fool people into voting Republican. It's not just "when it's your turn", it will be "Americans died because the Republicans didn't do their job".

The released recordings do not mention Hunter Biden or Burisma.
Derkach, a former member of the pro-Russia Party of Regions, has pushed for a corruption case against the Bidens. He and Rudy Giuliani, President Trumps personal attorney, met in Kiev in December.
Derkach has previously claimed Biden pressured Ukraine in December 2015 to force Shokins resignation and dangled $1 billion in loan guarantees as an incentive.
Bidens campaign responded to the release of the recording, claiming it was part of an ongoing effort by the Russians to hurt Biden.
They heavily edited this, and its still a nothingburger that landed with a thud, Biden spokesman Andrew Bates told the Washington Post.

(21,945 posts)Clearly, they were planning to do this all along -- open an election-year investigation into all of Biden's alleged "dirty deeds." Obviously the point was not to uncover any actual dirty deeds, but, just as they did with Hillary and Benghazi, to churn up enough FUD to get people wondering if there was any "there" there.
This FUD strategy worked in 2016 (with an assist from Putin) because Trump was able to cause just enough doubt about Hillary to squeeze out a victory in a handful of swing states and win the electoral college while still losing the popular vote. Even then, he still only won by a razor-thin margin.
But running the same strategy this time around was inherently risky. For a number of reasons, Biden seems more difficult to smear than Hillary was. And Trump is no longer the untested outsider who implored people in 2016 to just give him a chance and see what he could do -- "what do you have to lose?"
Nevertheless, despite Trump's personal unpopularity, they were going to try it again -- this time, the key to repeating the strategy was the strong economy. Trump could pull off the FUD plan, provided that he could persuade just enough swing-state voters to think, "Well, Trump sure is a jerk, but there's something about Joe Biden I'm just not quite comfortable with, and hey, the economy is doing well, so I guess I'll give Trump one more chance."
But now, in the midst of his terrible handling of the pandemic, and the collapse of the economy, this strategy just looks plain bizarre.
"Sure, Trump seems indifferent to the deaths of 100,000 Americans, and yes, unemployment is going above 20%, and the debt is soaring, and people are losing their health insurance, and everybody is going bankrupt, and the Trump administration doesn't have any kind of plan to get us out of this, but OMG did you see the latest news about Blue Star Strategies work on behalf of Burisma Holdings?!?!?!"
I guess it's too late for them to come up with a plan B though, which is why they're still trying to go down this road.
