HONG KONG (Reuters) - China will propose national security laws for Hong Kong in response to last years often violent pro-democracy protests that plunged the city into its deepest turmoil since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Thursday.
The South China Morning Post newspaper, citing unnamed sources, said the laws would ban secession, foreign interference, terrorism and all seditious activities aimed at toppling the central government and any external interference in the former British colony.
The legislation, which could be introduced as a motion to Chinas parliament, could be a turning point for its freest and most international city, potentially triggering a revision of its special status in Washington and likely to spark more unrest.
Online posts have already emerged urging people to gather to protest on Thursday night and dozens were seen shouting pro-democracy slogans in a shopping mall as riot police stood nearby.

(5,258 posts)That article is about China being upset about Pompeo expecting Hong Kong to remain fully autonomous, do you really see a problem with that? You sound like the media who wants to include the republicans side to a their stories even if it that side is bat shit crazy.

(1,832 posts)Hong Kong only got some democracy in the very last years of United Kingdom's rule. Before that our British friends was not willing to let the people of Hong Kong have any kind of real influence.
On that same note any pressure from the Trump government has nothing to do with wanting Democracy and Freedom for the people anywhere. It is just a fun way to kick China in the nuts.
And yes, there is plenty of very good reasons to kick China in the nuts. But none of them makes Pompeo a hero.

(251 posts)What else is new about this administration... No diplomats, diplomacy, or anything of any pressure to this. Just a loud dumb idiot president worried about his TV ratings 100% of the time. Trump is a real loser bozo that only rightwing flakes-n-crazies along with authoritarian zealots love, so no one in China will ever respect anything he says. They will just go ahead and do a silent Tienamen on Hong-Kong while our fat toad-stool of a fake-president winks at pornstars and tweets bullshit throughout the night while corrupting his hole party to do his self-indulgent biddings to break democracy and rule of law.
If we had a REAL president, there would be a ton of pressure on China to respect the independence of Hong Kong in the two-party system. Hong Kong should never be the horror show that Tienamen Square became.
