Covid-19: With daily cases mounting, India now stands fourth in the world

Source: Financial Express

On Tuesday, as India added 6,500 infections, Our World in Data figures show that only the US, Russia and Brazil had more infections.

Though the purpose of the lockdown was to slow down the spread of the coronavirus, after the fourth lockdown was announced, India has become one of the top four economies in terms of daily infections. On Tuesday, as India added 6,500 infections, Our World in Data figures show that only the US, Russia and Brazil had more infections. Brazil and the US are the only two countries to be adding over 10,000 infections every day.

India seems to be fourth in terms of daily deaths as well. On Tuesday, the country reported 146 deaths, behind Brazil, the US and Mexico. If we account for 7-day rolling averages, India’s daily infection addition is higher than what China, France. Germany, Italy or the United Kingdom had achieved at the peak of the virus.

But that may not mean that the lockdown hasn’t worked. If infections were growing exponentially, India would be closer to reporting 20,000 cases every day, as against 7,000 it is reporting today. Brazil is a classic example of how a bungled lockdown led to a rise in infections. Brazil reported its first infection on February 26, a full 28 days after India reported its first infection. On Tuesday, Brazil was averaging 17,000 daily infections and 800 daily deaths.

India, however, cannot breathe a sigh of relief. While 10 districts account for a majority of infections, cases are rising in other parts where migrants are returning home. Chhattisgarh is reporting a doubling of cases every four days, so are Uttarakhand and Assam. And Maharashtra is averaging 2,440 cases daily in the fourth lockdown, whereas it was 1,315 in the third lockdown. Delhi is averaging 524 as against 372, and Tamil Nadu is averaging 721 as against 560 earlier.

7. One difference is Modi recognizes Covid 19 is serious and put in place strict lockdown

But it's their disgusting treatment of the migrants and just ignoring their concerns which made things worse.

The migrants rightly did not believe the wealthier areas they worked in would provide food and other basic needs so they left to go to their home villages which spread the virus.

3. Even in India, liberal states are doing better than conservative states

because conservative asshole leaders who put profit over people are the virus. Modi's government locks up doctors who complain about not having enough PPE.

I wouldn't say that it's true that "liberal states are doing better than conservative states" here in the US.

There's probably a good reason why that's so (e.g., blue states tend to have greater population density), but blue states (and blue areas of red states) are where the pandemic has been the worst here in the U.S. - A county-by-county map of the virus looks quite a bit like one of those red/blue political maps.

9. Social distance, stay at home, and masking policies are generally better in blue states

because of the greater population density. Liberals are more likely to believe in science and listen to public health officials.

10. Which is entirely different from "doing better"

"Policies I agree with" are expected to be more common in blue areas (almost by definition). "Doing better" would imply lower infection and/or death rates... which isn't the case here. Don't know about India.

11. OK, India's most liberal state, Kerala, Has 35 million people and 4 deaths

Here in the US, policies I agree with are more common in blue states. The infection/death rates are higher in places that have higher population density, which are cities.

India also has culture wars where many conservatives think it's all a hoax or they blame migrant labor or believe shutdowns are a socialist plot against businesses/Modi, and so on.

12. That doesn't fit on the same left/right spectrum as in the U.S.

Kerala isn't "liberal" so much as they are communist.

Most of the articles highlighting Kerala's COVID success aren't comparing liberal vs conservative. They're comparing Marxist vs. Capitalist and explicitly draw the distinction with New York. They see New York on one side of the capitalist - Marxist spectrum, but on the liberal-conservative spectrum, they're on the other end.

against the do nothing/denial approach that others have chosen. Kerala's education, healthcare, and housing programs have helped them contain it as more of their people understood the scientific reasons for why they should stay home, social distance, wear masks, etc.

Republicans itching to re-open the country while the virus is still circulating will make sure we continue to lead the world.

5. I don't think this is right. Worldometers has India in 10th place, behind Turkey.

It might be true if you use two criteria:

1) Active cases, not total cases
2) May 27th data might be available to the article but not to Worldometers, yet.

India ranks 5th on Active cases, behind France, but India is adding cases more rapidly than France, perhaps enough that they might go past France today.

of considering the size of the population. It would have been useful to mention that there are a lot of people in India. It would have been even more useful to mention the per-capita daily deaths. It is a simple division, and your computer can do it - in fact you can just google the problem, and you will get the answer. Not sure if it is possible with Twitter - maybe that is the problem.
