Trump extends deployment orders for National Guard members responding to coronavirus

Source: Washington Post

Trump announced Thursday that he would extend the federal deployment orders of National Guard members involved in the coronavirus response through mid-August.

“The men and women of the National Guard have been doing a great job fighting the CoronaVirus,” Trump said in a tweet. “This week, I will extend their Title 32 orders through mid-August, so they can continue to help States succeed in their response and recovery efforts.”

The president’s tweet will be welcomed as a reprieve for state governments, as the federal government continues to pay a larger share of the funding required for guardsmen to operate. And it will be welcomed by guardsmen, who can accrue time toward early retirement and GI Bill benefits when in a federalized status.

The Trump administration had previously decided to end deployment orders for National Guard members on June 24. That would have left some who were placed under federal orders in late March just short of reaching a 90-day threshold that would allow them to collect retirement benefits early, before turning 60. The date also would have cut short access to some GI Bill benefits, though that could have been earned later.

This should NEVER have been at question--the Guard have been over-used in the past several years and here, when they are so needed, they were being badly used. And the states were being short-changed so someone could get help on the cheap.
Glad to be able to post some good news for a change!

politically-speaking.

Trump has absolutely no shame, he's proven that beyond doubt.

She's been all over this after he initially cut them off a day or two short of receiving the benefit. I don't think it's possible that he got shamed into doing the right thing, so one of his aides must have gotten through to him that this was a bad move against the military.
