MISSING THE TARGET
Published May. 31, 2020 10:37AM ET
Retail giant Target announced late Saturday that it will close 175 stores across the U.S. to keep employees safe during unrest over the death of George Floyd. Most of the stores are in the Minneapolis area, but other stores listed are in Illinois and California. We are heartbroken by the death of George Floyd and the pain it is causing communities across the country, Target Corporate said in a statement. At this time, we have made the decision to close a number of our stores. We anticipate most stores will be closed temporarily. Employees will be paid for up to 14 days of scheduled hours and will be offered positions at nearby stores.

(12,489 posts)People who pass on work now because they're making that extra 600 willl regret it when that goes away and someone else has taken their job
BamaRefugee
(3,483 posts)$600?
If you GO BACK TO WORK, they want to pay you a weekly bonus of $450 a week on top of what you earn. That's if you go back to work after it passes.
If you go back to work BEFORE it passes, too bad, no $450 for you, just your Target minimum wage.
Who knows what will actually come to fruition?

(3,483 posts)Even "human capital stock" can do that equation.
Not sure when the 600 a week thing runs out, is it on a definite date for everyone, regardless of how much they collected or does it run out on some date after you first recieve it?
I know folks who were getting the 600 a week and they are back at work now, but their employer ( a client of mine) had them come back before their benefits would have run out, so not sure how it works in total.

And thanks for clarifying!

(7,805 posts)the economy is down the toilet and you think it's ok for a retail giant like Target to close their doors forever??...Your inability to "find much" isn't the issue...the issue is people..no jobs, no shelter, no food, no money, no hope, no future...another shuttered business is not something to celebrate

(43,044 posts)I go to Walmart for selection, price. I have literally spent about $10 at Target in the last 10 years. For me, it just wasn't worth returning to shop there. For me, for my preferences as a consumer, that is what is important to me.

(6,791 posts)Sometimes they even sell at a loss, because the goal is to put all competition out of business - and then they can price higher. Sam admitted that when he was alive, and, while the economy overall is far from what it was then, nothing has happened to change that goal.

as a direct payment. But, the fascists are in control & sure, they sent a few crumbs, but for the 85% of Americans who aren't in the stock market its not quite good enough.

(7,805 posts)fifty one years ago my husband and I started out with $35 between us...and it took us a long long time to "make it"...he died recently and my income relies on keeping the economy alive...selfish yes but I know what it's like to shop food banks and live in what is euphemistically referred to as "the projects"...I know what it's like to be told by a grocery store clerk that my food stamps don't cover that particular brand of diapers..as for that one time only $1200 that is supposed to keep those in need forever beholding to the white assholes in Washington who prefer fascist-like dominance and subservience over equality, I want them out...I've lived thru this crap before...I hated it then and I hate it now...

(35,274 posts)It bought securities; then it sold them. As it sold them, the money vanished from the money supply.
The other $2.8 trillion or so will be monetized as debt.

(5,088 posts)My wonderful husband was fired from Panera because they decided to use this issue to make a fundamental change to their operation model. There was no warning about this. They just decided to put a bunch of people out of work because it was more profitable to do so during a pandemic.
So, to address an earlier statement, not only will I laugh when the stock market collapses, I will also cheer and celebrate the fact that the idiotic house of cards that has become our 'economy' will be done. I think what most people forget is that any 'suffering' from this event will only be as long lived as we let it. We d not have to 'recover' in the way that keeps the rich in power and still seen as being rich. That is just propaganda from those who are going to lose power. Don't fall for it. If some rich corporate ass wants to threaten to leave the US because we won't let him grub as much as he wants to, tough. Again, everyone seems to think that some corporations are too big to fail. Horse shit. There would be five other businesses champing at the bit to replace the one leaving. That rhetoric is again just the current regime trying to hold onto power. What you are seeing is the wealthy in this country trying to make sure they are still seen as 'the powerful'. I am tired of this act. It has driven this country to the brink of chaos and yet everyone wants things to 'return to normal'. I don't. I want things to get better.

The quote is what a female co-worker once asked me, before I honestly replied that I'd never even stepped inside a Target... at which point her brain seemed to break.
