Don Schneider who built Green Bay trucking company dead at 76

Don Schneider, who built a Green Bay trucking firm into one of the country's largest highway freight carriers, died Friday morning.

A Forbes 400 list billionaire with a humble manner - he worked from a bare-bones office, usually in jeans, at a stand-up desk - Schneider was 76. He had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years.

Schneider, chairman emeritus and former president and CEO of Schneider National Inc., presided over a company that not only survived the deregulation of the trucking industry, but thrived.

He was the second generation in a family business - his father, Al, started it in 1935 with a single truck - and expanded it greatly. Largely under Schneider's leadership, the company grew over the last 35 years from less than $100 million in annual revenue to $3.4 billion.

The company fields nearly 9,800 semi-tractors and 32,000 trailers. It includes a large logistics wing that Schneider started in 1993.
