Nancy Pelosi got indoor hair care at SF salon, report says
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
WASHINGTON House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had her hair shampooed and blow-dried indoors at a San Francisco hair salon Monday, although city rules do not allow for such care during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report.
Fox News reported the visit Tuesday and obtained security footage of the styling treatment.
San Francisco began allowing salons to operate outdoors starting Tuesday, with a plan to open indoor operations in October, but such services were not allowed Monday.
...
Pelosis spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement, The speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements. This business offered for the speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business. The speaker complied with the rules as presented to her by this establishment.

(9,998 posts)It's not a good look. She should know better. She's the Speaker, and must be aware that she's always being watched, and something like this has a good chance of getting out. And now it will be used as fodder for the other side.
And there were other employees present in the salon, so she should have been wearing a mask. Again, not a good look, especially after advocating for a nationwide mask mandate.
I'm sorry, I don't expect our side to be perfect, but I do expect us to be smart. She used her stature, and likely thought she would get away with it. Incidents like this would be fine if she were a repub, but our standards should be higher. And it does bug me a little that her office seems to be using several excuses to explain it away.
Anyways, I'm sure the media will be all over this tomorrow, as will all the right wing nutjobs. An unnecessary distraction 2 months from the most important election of the last 85 years.

(214 posts)sfstaxrep I agree with all the points in your post. But I don't think much will come of this story. The right wing media has been trashing Madam Speaker since before the Stone Age and I doubt that one voter will be influenced either way.

(12,640 posts)They put it back up quickly enough when others come near. It's often a human reaction, especially if she just had her hair washed and chemicals put in.
Mask gets damp and retains the smell of the hair treatment, I wouldn't doubt there is anyone who wouldn't pull a mask down to air or dry if it seemed safe for a minute or so.
I used to wear a KN94 when working shipyards; if I had a chance to get halfway fresh air for a moment in the heat, humidity, and nasty fumes, I'd pull my mask down just like that for a minute or two as soon as I felt it was safe.
Whether or not it was wise, she probably thought it was safe. Nobody really expects there to be a security camera to watch their every move in their "neighborhood salon".
That the only other person in the room is behind her, after all.
Haele
Polybius
(15,337 posts)But that irrelevant, because she never should have went inside. Salons are illegal indoors in SF until October, and "I didn't know" isn't a valid excuse.

And you know this to be her motivation, because ....?
Sorry -- not buying you're handwringing, "we can be better," BS. Maybe you can bring it back up in 2024.
Qutzupalotl
(14,289 posts)She was wearing a face covering. The video shows it partly down as she moves around mid-cut. So the statement from her spokesperson that she complied with procedures does check out in that respect.
However, blow-drying was not allowed, and indoor cuts were not available to others the day she went in. That leaves her open to accusations of do as I say, not as I do. So a bad move that could have been avoided.
The Fox News article focuses on the business owner, who called it a slap in the face. So they are playing up that angle.
She will survive, though. The right might get a few days of play out of it, then its on to the next chaotic disaster.

Been hearing it all day.
She absolutely should have known better and needs to apologize. And her apology of claiming "set up" doesn't cut it.
A good apology is:
1. Say you are sorry.
2. Say that you regret it
3. Acknowledge exactly what you did wrong ("I broke the rules. I didn't think it would hurt, and that was stupid."
4. Empathy -- I know people are hurting from this rule and shocked at my rule-breaking, and I regret it.
5. Repentance -- I will strive not to do something stupid like this again
6. Please forgive me for what I did.
Polybius

The City of San Francisco decided on more restrictive regulations, limiting salons to outdoor service only. To ignore the rule makes it easier for someone to think they can ignore OTHER rules that they dont like. It also plays into Trumps argument that they think theyre more entitled than you.

The Chronicle has left messages for the salon owner, Erica Kious. Kious told Fox that a stylist who rents a chair at the salon texted her about the impending visit from the San Francisco Democrat on Sunday night.
The salon owner criticized Pelosi over the visit but did not explain why she allowed the stylist to use the salon during the shutdown.

(160,452 posts)Donald Trump mocks 'crazy' Nancy Pelosi over her visit to closed hair salon in defiance of COVID rules saying 'turning her in on tape is a big deal' and claiming Republicans will flip the House and 'send Nancy packing'

President Donald Trump mocked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for getting caught mask-less at a beauty salon, flaunting San Francisco COVID-19 rules.
'The Beauty Parlor owner must really dislike Crazy Nancy Pelosi. Turning her in, on tape, is a really big deal,' Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. 'She probably treats him like she treats everyone else...And she strongly supported a Kennedy who just lost in, of all places, Massachusetts!'
In another tweet on the topic, Trump boasted 'we will almost certainly take back the House.'
San Francisco beauty parlors weren't supposed to open until September 1, the next day, and services were to be done outside only.
The salon owner Erica Kious called Pelosi's visit a 'slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feel that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can't work.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday she takes responsibility for "falling for a setup," after a video leaked to Fox News showed she visited a San Francisco hair salon for a personal appointment at a time when the city was not allowing indoor services due to COVID-19 restrictions.
What she's saying: "I take responsibility for trusting the word of a neighborhood salon that I've been to over the years many times. When they said what we're able to accommodate people, one person at a time, and that we can set up that time, I trusted that."
"As it turns out, it was a setup. So I take responsibility for falling for a setup. And that's all I'm going to say on that."
"I think that this salon owes me an apology, for setting me up," Pelosi added.
The other side: In a phone interview with Fox News, salon owner Erica Kious said, It was a slap in the face that [Pelosi] went in, you know, that she feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I cant work."
Kious added she "cant control what her stylists do if they rent chairs from her, as one of them did for Pelosi's appointment.
