Secretaries of states warn Election Day could drag out

Source: The Hill

Several secretaries of states warned Election Day could drag out as states shift efforts to address concerns raised around voting during the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic.

"We should be prepared for this to be closer to an Election Week, as opposed to an Election Day," Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"The bottom line is we are not going to have the full results and a counting of all of our ballots on election night," she added.

She said her office is increasing tabulators and capacity to more efficiently and securely count ballots, stressing that she is focused on accuracy over speed.

Depends. Some have secret ballots, some don't.

The counting of the EC vote is typically public.

https://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/electoral-college-electors-232791 does an overall decent job, even if the examples and numbers are 2016.

5. The "warning" framing makes it sound like there will be dire consequences

if the result isn't known by the morning of November 4. But the fact is that it's INEVITABLY going to take longer to get the results of the election this year, and it doesn't matter, because the speed that the votes are counted is not important.

Fortunately, most people should be ready for this outcome. On election night, I seriously doubt there will be any respectable news outlets acting all shocked and surprised that the votes aren't in yet, as if there's been some kind of unexpected breakdown in the election system. They will be well prepared for this obvious eventuality.

I do like the "Election Week" framing and I think we should embrace that. Hope everyone is ready for Election Week, starting on November 3!

And if need be, through 3rd world-style PEADs.

They'll end up having to pull him out of the Oval Office by the hair plugs.

You'd hope they'd see their long-term interest in being responsible, but they may go for the short-term "controversy" instead.

And social media like Facebook and Twitter will be manipulated by Russian bots and rabid Republicans to stir things up.

My guess is that on election night they’ll have their “serious” coverage led by Chris Wallace etc taking the line that “there’s a long way to go before we know who wins,” and then their daytime coverage starting the next morning will immediately follow up with, “The race hasn’t officially been called but here’s a long line of Trump cronies telling us why the election is fixed/rigged/fake so we should stop the counting and declare Trump the winner,” and they’ll blast that all day long.

By the end of the first week Trump will be out of his mind and calling for the counting to stop.

Biden had better not concede (as Hillary suggested). I have the feeling heavy drinking and smoking will be on the rise during this period.
