Sorry for yelling, but its exasperating. Putting aside the awful human cost, just looking at it purely politically.

All you had to do was simply be a leader. Instead of calling it a Democratic hoax, you could have said you want to work with Democrats to make sure the US is ready and able with masks, ventilators, tests... Come down on anyone that doubted the pandemic, even if they were in your cult. Be clear about that and use your health experts to guide the country and support their recommendations.

how he reveals who he really is. No President is ever 'sailing along' unless they have mailed it in. It explains his executive time and why he doesn't show up in his office until 10 or 11 in the morning and quits by 4. He's lazy and undisciplined. Everything he had in life was given to him and he leveraged wealth, social position and lawyers into getting what he wanted without really having to work. And as has been pointed out, the pandemic should have been a gift to any reasonably competent leader. Just look at the states whose governors provided strong leadership, they're all shoe ins for re-election. MI, MD, VA, NY, WA, and CA all love their governors.
