Joe Lieberman endorses Susan Collins, appears in ad for her in Maine
Source: NBC News
WASHINGTON Joe Lieberman, a former U.S senator and the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, on Wednesday.
Lieberman is also appearing in an ad for Collins as she faces perhaps the toughest race of her career.
"I'm a lifelong Democrat but I put my country first, always. That's why I'm supporting Susan Collins for Senate," Lieberman, a Democrat turned independent, said in the ad, which is paid for by the Republican Jewish Coalition.
RJC is spending $400,000 to run the ad on digital platforms, aimed at persuading women voters in Maine, according to the group's spokesman Neil Strauss. Lieberman called Collins "a fighter for women's issues" in the ad.

This is disgusting, I'm ashamed that he was my Senator decades ago and I may have voted for him (forget it was so long ago)
Hopefully this has a negative effect on Collins' campaign.

I know, there are so many better candidates Gore could have chosen and won big. Lieberman was a mistake.
I don't understand the constant pivot to the center right that was embraced by Democratic strategists since Reagan. I guess it was to present a ticket that had something for everyone. Maybe it works sometimes. Biden was a calculated foil to the scary black man preaching hope and change. That worked pretty well, but Lieberman was/is a, to quote you, rat bastard.

(27,794 posts)What bugged me about him was that in 2000, he enthusiastically endorsed late military ballots being counted in Florida (which of course would have tended Republican). I was looking this up recently, and if memory serves, about 1500-1700 late military ballots were accepted. This had nothing to do with the postmark - they were cast after the election and no one would say boo about it.
Then, when he (deservedly) lost the Democratic primary in 2002, he put himself on the ballot anyway. It still maddens me that he cared more about his own losing efforts in 2002 than the ballot I cast in 2000 where he actually won the election!
Lieberman did not deserve Al Gore's faith in him. He really let down the side.

(81,406 posts)Lieberman a member of the board of the organization that DeVos founded, the American Federation of Children talked about DeVos in glowing terms and said she has helped hundreds of thousands of children.
She is disciplined, organized, knows how to set goals and then develop practical plans to achieve them. She is really a purpose-driven team builder, he said. He noted that the Department of Education is bigger than anything she or virtually all of the senators on the panel had ever run but said she is ready to take on the task.
And then, he said: I know that some people are questioning her qualifications to be secretary of education, and too many of those questions seem to me to be based on the fact that she doesnt come from within the education establishment. But honestly I believe that today, thats one of the most important qualifications you could have for this job.

I, and many other dems, including the current Dem Senator of my state, did not vote for Gore because of his choice of Lieberman. It was clear to me then, just as its clear now, that Lieberman was a covert publican.
