SeaWorld San Antonio lays off 242 employees

Source: KSAT

SAN ANTONIO – SeaWorld San Antonio has laid off 242 employees, according to documents the theme park submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission.

According to SeaWorld San Antonio Park President Byron Surrett, the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the theme park’s attendance and revenue.

Even though the park opened in June at a reduced operating schedule and guest capacity after being shut down in March, it couldn’t recover due to " self-imposed limitations and consumer concerns regarding COVID-19 and other factors."

“The effects upon the amusement and theme park industry have been significant and sustained,” Surrett said in the filing.

This is the thing. Even for those states that have been pretty lenient about shut downs, just because a tourist attraction has not closed does not mean that people will continue to attend in the midst of the pandemic. This is why Republican efforts to just continue business as usual and oppose social distancing measures will not solve our economic problems.

The news of layoffs also explains Trump's continued efforts to find distractions that obscure the economic damage that his mismanagement of the pandemic has caused.

They've stopped using Orcas in shows and that's a good step, but dolphins are also not play things for our amusement and they still use those. And seals too.
