EPA's top lawyer to depart

EPA General Counsel Matt Leopold told POLITICO he will depart the Trump administration in the coming weeks, and he defended his litigation record at the agency amid mixed reviews.
Leopold, who joined EPA in 2018 after years working in environmental law for the Justice Department and state of Florida, said he intends to remain in the Washington area to practice environmental law, though he did not disclose specific plans.
He led the agency's legal team in defending EPA's raft of deregulatory actions that drew a barrage of lawsuits from states and environmental groups, as well as on occasion from industry groups that felt the agency had not gone far enough in easing rules.
I have been serving in this job for over two and a half years and I have done a lot of work defending some of the agencys most high-profile regulations, and it was just the right time for me and my family to move on from public service and back into private practice, he said in an interview.
