Pennsylvania Supreme Court extends mail ballot deadlines for November election

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court extended the states mail ballot deadlines on Thursday, a move that could allow tens of thousands of additional votes to be counted and will likely draw criticism from Republicans, who have argued that votes should be received by Election Day.
State law says mail ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day, but the high court said Thursday that ballots will be counted if they are received by 5 p.m. the Friday after the Nov. 3 election. To count, ballots arriving after Election Day must either be postmarked by Nov. 3 or have no proof they were sent afterward. Ballots that arrive by the new deadline with missing or illegible postmarks would still be counted.
In addition, the court held that state election law allows counties to use drop boxes for hand delivery of mail ballots; denied requests from President Donald Trumps campaign and others to allow poll watchers to work in counties other than the ones where they are registered; and denied a request that other people be allowed to deliver voters' ballots.
Along with another decision that kicked the Green Partys presidential candidate off the ballot, the rulings were a boost to Democratic nominee Joe Bidens campaign in a critical swing state just 47 days before Election Day.

(43,126 posts)Allowing everyone the opportunity to vote in a close time frame, letting local jurisdictions run elections, and without prohibitive restrictions on how and where to cast a ballot.
Proof that elections matter. There was a time the State Supreme Court was filled with Republican asshats.

(15,278 posts)the mandatory judicial retirement age from 70 to 75. There was plenty of angst in the local media about the ballot question being confusing and whatnot. But voters knew Justice Baer was approaching mandatory retirement age and his vote was still needed on the state supreme court. There was plenty of post-election angst that the question passed, but voters knew what they were doing and the consequences.
This why voting matters and courts matter. Now absentee ballots can be printed and mailed out with only a couple of days delay.

(128,834 posts)because initially I had missed the Green Party candidates being completely kicked off. The lower court had only ruled to remove the VP candidate but the high court threw both off!
The drop box issue is also a big win for us too! I expect the GOP is going to try to end run in federal court but so far, the (slowly-being-radicalized) federal courts (as they should) have deferred to state courts when it comes to things related to state Constitutions.

(9,760 posts)I do worry that Trumpsters don't seem to mind going against what a judge or the law tells them to do or not do. Our household would definitely like to make use of the drop boxes. Though, when being paranoid, we wonder how safe those are in making sure our vote gets counted!
We also worry that our signature might not match closely enough with what's on file, but did see some good news on that.

(128,834 posts)the Election board announced a proposal for 15 locations to act as "satellite" election locations (in addition to the 2 "earlier" ones used during the primar) where people can register to vote, request a mail-in ballot, and drop off their mail-in ballot. The plan was expected to be voted on next week and approved. I know this city knows what is at stake and will do all it can to protect the vote - even with expected interference from the GOP.
