Collins opposes replacing Ginsburg before November
Maine's senior senator says the Senate may begin the process of reviewing President Trump's nominee to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but a vote shouldn't take place before the election.
BY ROB WOLFE STAFF WRITER
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins on Saturday said she would oppose replacing the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the November election, though she would not object if the Senate began the process of vetting President Trump's potential nominee. ... "In fairness to the American people, who will either be re-electing the President or selecting a new one, the decision on a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court should be made by the President who is elected on November 3rd," Collins, a key swing voter, said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

In her statement Saturday, Collins said she would have "no objection" to the Senate's reviewing the credentials of a Trump nominee, but added that the seat ultimately should be filled by the winner of the upcoming presidential election.
"In order for the American people to have faith in their elected officials, we must act fairly and consistently - no matter which political party is in power," Collins said. "President Trump has the constitutional authority to make a nomination to fill the Supreme Court vacancy, and I would have no objection to the Senate Judiciary Committee's beginning the process of reviewing his nominee's credentials."
She aded: "Given the proximity of the presidential election, however, I do not believe that the Senate should vote on the nominee prior to the election. In fairness to the American people, who will either be re-electing the President or selecting a new one, the decision on a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court should be made by the President who is elected on November 3rd."

(12,486 posts)So if Biden wins, that means she should vote NO. *should*
Of course, if SHE loses, then she could just say "F them" to US and go ahead and vote yes

(67,782 posts)...and that there should be no vote on trump's nominee BEFORE THE ELECTION!
But even when Biden wins, trump's nominee will already be in the process, and if the Committee votes to go to the full Senate, there will be a VOTE on trump's nominee!
She's playing both sides here.

(34,857 posts)She's just saying the Senate should not vote ON the nominee. If it comes up to a vote, is she a yay or nay?

(11,970 posts)...no one would be confirmed (i.e. no vote taken) until after the electiony. So all she did was say she wouldn't do something there was no way she could have done anyway. She might as well have put out a statement that she will not be vacationing on Mars.

(34,857 posts)Technically, McConnell can extend the session and push through a nominee before the election but I am not sure he'll do it.

(8,277 posts)...for now. Hopefully they stick to this after the dump loses, to avoid any scotus interference.

Seems she is poised to lose.
When she does, and when trump loses too, the vote will still take place as a last salvo.
To hell with her and her statement.

(13,915 posts)In very specific terms. Does that mean she will vote against a candidate that is brought to a vote before election day? Or inaguration day?
Or does it mean when a candidate is brought to a vote, she will express her regret and concern about the disruption of the process as she votes for them?
