Mitt Romney supports holding a vote on Trump's Supreme Court pick this year

Source: CNBC

Sen. Mitt Romney said Tuesday he will support holding a vote on President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee this year, all but assuring Republicans can push forward with filling the vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death.

“The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees,” the Utah Republican said in a statement. “Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications.”

Republicans aim to quickly confirm the next justice on the top U.S. court even with a presidential election only six weeks away. As the Senate has 53 GOP senators and Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie, four Republicans would have needed to buck their party to block consideration of a nominee before the election.

While GOP Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have opposed filling the seat before the election, it is unclear who other than Romney — the only senator to break from his party in voting to remove Trump from office this year — would join them. Despite his support for considering a nominee, Romney did not commit to voting to confirm the president’s eventual court pick. “What I intend to is to proceed with the consideration process, and if a nominee actually reaches the floor, then I will vote based upon the qualifications of that nominee,” he told reporters Tuesday after issuing the statement.

Rom bucked him in the impeachment, which will cost him anyway I think.

But if there is a majority of conservatives that see a path to victory through trump, if it becomes apparent he will win another 4 years, any con who doesn’t side with him here gets the ejection seat on november 4th. Romney has too many Mormon faithful conservative voters to show any spine here.

And as a Mormon he wants roe v wade overturned anyway.

you WILL vote FOR Trump's nominee? The misogyny runs deep among GOP men. Think about it. They could put forth the effort to nominate one of Trump's favorites but something unusual could come up and some could vote against confirmation?

Romney has to be a bit careful because some of these prospective nominees might not be inclined to see the Church of Latter Day Saints as a valid religion, especially the fervent Catholic prospective nominees.

concerned for the "proper" procedure in confirming their RWer's choice. If that is the case, hopefully at least the people of America will get that, but alas the USA's budget bill expires October 1, 2020, and that should have priority over this issue.

who vehemently helped to block President Obama's Merrick Garland nomination due to the same bullshit "not in an election year" mantra.

Unfortunately Toomey is not up for re-election this year (not until 2022) so he can easily blow this off like the rest of them. Democrats here in PA need to take names and do an extra push to remove Toomey once and for all.

It's been near impossible to get 2 Democrats serving together here (we are generally consistent with one of each party), but I would love to get 2 anyway (we briefly had that when Arlen Specter switched parties helping to seal a 60-vote Democratic super-majority during the ACA drafting and mark-up in 2009).

In the end, they are voting with their parties, not with the President, just as we expect all of our Senators to vote with our party. You can’t blame them, the Supreme Court is the ultimate prize for everyone.

Do you honestly think that if the shoe were on the other foot, any of our Senators would vote no, if it meant losing the big prize? We may allow for a few of them (like Murkowski, and Collins), but if they were the deciding vote, no way.

I am not trying to use the both side argument, I’m just speaking the truth. For party ideals, this the biggest deal. This is what both sides wait for.

It truly amazes me that this is the hill on which they are willing to die. All willing to sacrifice their reputations, and the very lives of those they are sworn to protect. For this guy, bereft of honor, integrity, knowledge, discernment, compassion, empathy and loyalty. For someone who would throw them under the bus the nanosecond it serves his purpose.
The founding fathers mutually pledged "our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor." How far we have fallen.
