Axios-Ipsos poll: Vaccine resistance grows

Source: Axios

The share of Americans eager to try a first-generation coronavirus vaccine dropped significantly in the latest installment of the Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index, as President Trump hyped suggestions that one could be ready before the election.

Why it matters: As the U.S. reaches a milestone of 200,000 deaths, this underscores the risks of politicizing the virus and its treatments.
* The trend is taking place among Republicans as well as Democrats.
* It's another warning of the potential difficulties health authorities will face in convincing enough Americans that a vaccine is safe and effective.

The big picture: Americans don't see the vaccine as a silver bullet right now. Many respondents in Week 25 of our national survey feel it's risky and at least want to wait to see how others do. And only half are prepared to pay out of pocket for it.
* Just 13% say they'd be willing to try it immediately.
* This all comes against the backdrop of an uncertain return-to-school experiment. One in three parents of schoolchildren says there already have been virus-related scares or outbreaks in their school district.

I've been "pro-vax" since being a guinea pig for the Salk vaccine tests.

The damage to the FDA and CDC will take a generation to recover. Resistance to the COVID vaccine will last even when Trump loses in the fall although it may be less. It will be capitalized on by anti-vaxxers to expand to other vaccines as well. For years to come antivaxxers will be talking about the crooked CDC and FDA and their faked tests.

Like everything else, anything Trump touches turns to shit.

And there are linkages between the various anti-authoritarian and anti-state beliefs that underlie anti-vaxx thinking and neo-nazism (for example, in QAnon). This is all extremely dangerous.

7. This is a very simplistic view. Axios should be ashamed.

I would not IMMEDIATELY take a vaccine pumped by the Trump administration.

She challenged me: “Would you take that vaccine?” and without thinking who I was talking to, I said “Hell no!” Which, sadly, she took as permission to rant, so I forcibly changed the subject.

Trump is going to have trouble selling injectable snake oil to some of his core constituents, though. He’s been cozying up to anti-vaxxers since at least 2007. (LA Times 9-9-2020 Michael Hiltzik)

10. Assuming Biden wins, he'll be working to restore confidence in the CDC and FDA.

Hopefully, by the time the vaccine is available to most Americans, Biden will have reduced the number of anti-vaxxers.

As with all vaccines it should be : don't take it, don't ask me to pay for your healthcare.

Unless it's fully tested, how is anybody going to know if it's safe and effective?

and no, I'm not an anti-vaxxer. We've given our son every vaccine recommend, thus far.

If covid turned much worse, I would probably take it.

But, over the last 8 weeks, I've returned to the office, my wife and son have gone back to school, we attended a sporting event with 25,000 others, we've gone back to church, and we get out and about at pre-covid levels, although we still avoid restaurants that lack an outdoor option. We mask everywhere and constantly wash our hands. Basically, we use common sense and don't take extraordinary risks. And so far, so good.

I believe my family and I can effectively manage our risk without taking a vaccine or, at least until, it's widespread for a while.

With all the various companies and universities racing to find a vaccine, I'm not that concerned we will end up with some deadly poison. Too many incredibly smart people are focus on it, and while we know Trump will take credit, its not like he was in the lab literally creating a vaccine.

The one thing l might give him credit on is his pushing the govt and pharma companies to try to speed up the process. It'll be a great thing, as long as safety won't have been sacrificed.
