Dianne Feinstein's husband named in UC admissions scandal, wrote 'inappropriate' letters for years

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s husband finds himself in the middle of the latest University of California admissions scandal, accused in a state audit of improperly using his clout to help an applicant get into the elite public system. But Richard Blum, a UC regent, told The Chronicle he’s done nothing wrong and has been writing letters on behalf of many friends and family for years.

“I did it a bunch of times,” Blum said, adding that he has never considered it a problem to write recommendation letters directly to chancellors and bypassing the traditional admissions process. However, a policy prohibiting such influence has been in place throughout Blum’s 18-year tenure on the Board of Regents.

Blum’s name emerged Thursday after California’s independent auditor released a scathing report showing that UC Berkeley improperly admitted at least 55 underqualified, often wealthy, students based on insider connections over a six-year period.

In one case, a regent unidentified in the audit sent an “inappropriate letter of support” directly to the UC Berkeley chancellor on behalf of a student with only a 26% chance of winning a spot off the wait list, despite the policy prohibiting efforts by regents to influence admissions decisions by going around the regular process. The applicant was admitted.

News gives a variety of reasons for improper "pull" being used.

Some reported it was the kids of the wealthy who had just previously made donations--before saying that it was also friends and colleagues of UC folk who were using improper influence. (In other words, shout "money" and then clarify that you really silently added "sometimes".)

A lot of the students improperly admitted were deemed "student-athletes". Which should sound suspiciously familiar.

The Senate is no longer the gentlemen’s club of polite manners and nonpartisan discussions. Mitch McConnell has turned it into a den of pit bulls, and Democratic Senators need to have backbones of steel and big, sharp teeth and a willingness to use them. I don’t think Feinstein fits that mold.

level the playing field (DC/PR statehood, expand judicial bench, end gerrymandering) that then we could return to something ethical and sane?

...university with (last time I looked) 9 or 10 campuses across the state, though only a handful are famous.

USC aka University of Southern California is a private institution with afaik one campus, in Los Angeles. It gets government contracts and grants for research and such, but it is and always has been a private university just as Yale and Harvard are. There are rules, however, and for the life of me I’ve never understood why parents with as much money as they gave in bribes didn’t simply do it the old-fashioned way and endow a Chair through the appropriate gifts and donations department. I’m sure USC would have looked kindly on their spawn afterward. But bribing a coach? Please.

As for UC Regent Blum not knowing policy about writing letters of recommendation directly to chancellors, I kinda sorta tend to believe that, but that was quite the oversight on his part. That’s a very big OOPS, and I have a feeling he will resign from the Board of Regents by Monday at the latest. Sir, that kind of Affirmative Action for Rich White Kids has gone out of fashion at taxpayer-funded colleges. They can start at State or Community college and transfer to University once they prove they can do the work, and their degree will say University.

As for Senator Feinstein, I hope she can weather this storm, which is his storm. We need her in the Senate in the here and now, not fighting for her political life against Repubs demanding a recall — because yes, under the right circumstances, we could end up with a GOP Senator.

I’m finally ready for her to contemplate retirement, though, and if she should choose to leave while Gavin Newsom is Governor, he could appoint a Democratic Congressman or woman to fill her seat. During the Impeachment hearing we all got introduced to some sterling Californians, such as Adam Schiff, Ted Lieu, and Eric Swallwell.

I will be SO GLAD when 2020 is in the rearview mirror.

There’s never enough slots for qualified freshmen earning straight As from their high schools, much less anybody else. In the modern era UC started striving for diversity, in order to better represent a cross-section of the taxpayers.

I don’t know what they’re doing these days, but there was a time they used Affirmative Action, which I supported. Then the citizens of the state voted to end Affirmative Action because of the usual resentments that somebody was getting something that they didn’t deserve and that is was specifically harming them.

Regardless, all taxpayers still pay in to the educational system, and in my opinion and that of others like me, there is a net benefit to having a cross-section of society represented, even if you have to give some of the applicants a boost to get there.

That’s not intended to give a boost to a rich slacker coasting on Daddy’s connections — plenty of time for that when they start looking for a job in some business where being well-connected is just another box to check off.

I am sure Mr Blum thought he was just writing letters of recommendation for his friends’ kids. I certainly looked among friends and neighbors when helping my teenage son put an application packet together. The difference being, I stapled the recommendations to the application which went to an admissions officer, and my friends and neighbors didn’t include either a member of the Board of Regents or a UC campus Chancellor.

Mr Blum didn’t notice the world didn’t work the way he was used to any more when he signed on 18 years ago, and now it is rather forcefully being drawn to his attention. Big Oops.

This turned the elite UC system from being a public service into a game of just getting in. Most play the game fairly but others cheat.

In my humble opinion, universities should only be for people looking to either teach or do academic research or both. We should create career vocational schools to prepare the American workforce.

Liberal Arts, history, math, critical reasoning, etc. should be taught in High School which should be extended 2 years.

What we currently have is an educational system that does not prepare the masses for life and only works for a select few.

If you think that's okay and that only the academically gifted should have access to higher education, then don't complain about MAGAts ever again.

a potential candidate is up to the school personnel & department faculties themselves.
It's obvious these "students" wanted to get into some school & knew someone influential as Senator Feinstein's husband they would certainly ask for it. If the man just wrote recommendation letters alone and no bribing was involved, I'm OK with it.

Which goes back to my original point: investigate the school officials who actually gave approval to admit these unqualified students. How does it happen that they passed muster & got admitted? Go after the school officials!!

I'm not saying those who enabled the cheating ala the Lori Loughlin types in college admission scandal shouldn't be prosecuted. They should. If Mr. Feinstein took bribes in return for writing letters, he shoudl be as well. But if he just wrote letters, he's not making decision for admission. The crooked school officials are.

And shame on the parents of these kids. If your kid doesn't get into a prestigious school, get him/her into one they're eligible & that's more in line with the student's abilities. There are plenty of lesser known great schools. All 4 of our kids attended state schools of their own choosing - an Aggie, a Longhorn, a Mav & a Sooner. 3 of the 4 kids were eligible to attend Ivies but didn't bother. They got an excellent education from all 4 institutions and are now reaping the benefits in their respective careers, and we saved a bundle thanks to their wise choices.

She was the first to find the body of Harvey Milk, the FIRST out and proud gay politician (city supervisor) in California, where he was murdered, in San Francisco's City Hall. Dan White murdered Milk and Mayor George Moscone, November 27th, 1978. Dan White went on to use "the twinkie defense" as his excuse.

Dianne has seen, up close, the result of hate, and I love her for her political accomplishments and for being such a strong ally of the LGBTQ community.

But I believe it is time for her to bow out gracefully. There are many qualified and deserving replacements.
