Oregon lawmakers demand answers after a report alleges that the Trump administration spied on protesters' electronic communication

The Trump administration may have violated the US Constitution by illegally spying on protesters in Portland, four Oregon lawmakers charged in a letter to Chad Wolf, acting head of the Department of Homeland Security.
Earlier this week, The Nation reported that federal agents deployed by President Donald Trump may have intercepted protesters' phone communications and extracted data from their electronic devices.
"Congress has enacted strict legal protections which require government agencies to obtain the approval of an independent judge before searching Americans' devices and surveilling their communications," states the September 25 letter, signed by US Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, as well as US Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici.

"These recent reports, which allege that DHS has deployed high-tech surveillance technologies against protesters in Portland, raise serious concerns, which Congress has a responsibility to investigate," the lawmakers wrote.

(86,337 posts)The high tech equipment and personnel be under the control of NatSec or some arm of the military? And how is that not fascist? Not that I hadn't expected it but I wonder which agency under HHS was conducting such operations.

(4,030 posts)under the Patriot Act, initiated under GW, we are all subject to observation. For the government to say that they dont or cant do unauthorized observation without proper protocol reminds me of the expression; Dont believe anything until it has been officially denied.
We are perilously close to the brink. Im not screaming fire (or maybe I am) but weve been hearing from knowledgeable and well informed sources not just this week, or month, but for the past three years about the dangers that Donald Trump poses to democracy. And yet, we have been complacent from the start.
My hope is that after the chaos thats about to erupt after the votes are cast, assuming that Biden wins, that we will eventually come to our senses and build America back up to the stature that was once admired around the world. Joe wont win if its a close election. Republicans will stack the deck in ways we havent even thought of. See Milwaukee Journal article, Group says Wisconsin cities cant legally accept election grants. Sorry, but I always have difficulty reposting from the Journal.
This is far from over. If youre a religious person, break out the rosary NOW.
