Missouri reports record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations
Source: St Louis Today
ST. LOUIS As Missouri again reported a record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations Friday, the leader of the local pandemic response warned that cases are rising quickly in rural areas, a change since previous months of the pandemic.
Missouris hospitalization numbers have been rising for weeks. Health experts have warned that hospitals will be challenged if new coronavirus case numbers continue to swell through flu season.
This week, Mercy Hospital Washington, seeing higher numbers of virus patients than ever, transferred two COVID-19 patients to another facility because of concerns about capacity.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported on Friday that there were 1,068 patients in hospitals statewide with presumed or confirmed COVID-19, the highest number on record. The data lags three days, and not every hospital reports every day.

(128,844 posts)where the state I think maxed out around 2,800 hospitalized at the same time, with almost half here in Philly. That was back in the March - April timeframe and we have about twice the population of Missouri. We had even started setting up overflow space just in case (it was used for about 6 patients IIRC). Fortunately the state shutdown stopped the trend in its tracks, but many of the cases that happened in long-term care/rehab/nursing facilities were still working through the system for some time after.
I even heard a news report here today where one of the counties was warning people who have seasonal allergies to really pay attention to their symptoms because what they were finding was that many who were coming in and testing positive said they had waited because they assumed it was just "allergies". The report then went on to say that the doctors had to explain to them some of the similarities AND differences between COVID symptoms and allergies and suggested that people start their allergy meds early and don't wait if they suspect something is amiss (e.g., if the congestion feels as if it is coming from lower down in the chest, which is a red flag, vs in the upper chest, which is more common with allergies).

(34,661 posts)here in Nevada we will be seeing one hell of a spike within ten days. Now that Bars are open and Trump and his Kids are holding Rallies around the State. Just what could go wrong. Yesterdays Pahrumph Nevada Winery appears to have been mostly Seniors and zero Masks. Had four 80 year old neighbors who were in attendance. All Four have Pre Existing issues.

not surprised by these numbers considering the rural areas choose not to follow guidelines. Labor Day and that motorcycle rally in the Ozarks last week didnt help any. KC area not any better. Its well over 10% infection rate. I have a friend that is an oncology nurse who gets so angry when she sees people without a mask on in publiceven though we have a mask mandate. She hasnt told me in so many words, but think she has lost patients to it.
