COVID-19 Daily Cases On The Rise In Nearly Half Of U.S. States

Source: NPR

The number of new daily coronavirus infections in the U.S. continued to rise this past week, driven by upward trends in nearly half the states that have pushed total cases in the country past 7 million. At the same time, a recent study suggests the vast majority of Americans haven't been exposed, far below what's required to quell the virus's spread through "herd immunity."

Daily cases were largely on a downward trend through August and early September from highs in July, but are now going up again.

According to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Tracker, the U.S. reported more than 55,000 new cases on Friday. In total, the U.S. has more than 7,074,000 infections with 204,000 dead as a result of COVID-19.

Overall, about two-dozen states and territories reported an upward trend in new infections, with some states setting and breaking records in days.

Even as cases start to tick upward despite a drop in testing in states such as Florida, you also have States accelerating the rate of reopening again and even prohibiting cities from imposing mask mandates.

Hair and nail salons just opened back up for indoor business after doing everingthing oudoors in parking lots for weeks.

All this while the number infected is the highest it's ever been, and Republicans refusing to wear masks.

It is a horrific disaster in the making.

2. U.S. Attorney General Threatens SF With Legal Action Over COVID-19 Restrictions

Of course, even in areas that are taking COVID seriously, you will have the federal government doing its best to undermine efforts to control the spread.

Is it time to go back to church? The U.S. Attorney is threatening legal action against San Francisco if it doesn’t allow churches to reopen.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is relieved the U.S. Attorney’s Office is pressuring the city to allow places of worship to open.

The Department of Justice sent Mayor London Breed a letter that said current COVID-19 restrictions limiting places of worship to one person at a time infringe on religious freedom and violate First Amendment rights.

The letter said the restrictions must be changed or further action may be taken.

3. That's nuts. The restrictions apply to everyone. Churches aren't being singled out.

This is not Chicken Pox and from all the researchers who have been studying it from inception, the antibodies (if the body manages to make enough and you even survive a large dose of the virus) are only around about 3 or so months before they start fading away.

Herd immunity starts at somewhere in the 40% to 70% range.

Herd mentality starts as soon as you vote Republican.

Sept. 12 was the post-mid-summer-peak low point in U.S. daily new cases. It's been going up since then.

Daily tests, and positivity rates, U.S.

The solid blue line is the test positivity rate (has been trending down since a July peak, currently 4.9%), 7 day moving average

The tall light orange bars are daily tests -- unfortunately there's no 7 day moving average or such. Looks like it went down after the July peak but has been headed up since early September to a little above the previous peak of testing in late July.

This shows tests per 1,000 people by state in last 2 weeks (and positivity rates), but unfortunately no U.S. overall, sigh.
