Trump campaign sues to block mail-in ballot rule changes
Source: ABC News
RALEIGH, N.C. -- President Donald Trump's campaign committee and the Republican National Committee sued Saturday to block North Carolina election officials from enforcing rule changes that could boost the number of ballots counted in the presidential battleground state.
The Republicans lawsuit claims a new system adopted by the State Board of Elections will allow for absentee ballots to be cast late and without proper witness verification, which invites fraud, coercion, theft, and otherwise illegitimate voting.
The elections board on Tuesday issued new guidance allowing mail-in absentee ballots with deficient information to be fixed without forcing the voter to fill out a new blank ballot for November's general election.
The change means absentee voters who dont provide complete information on their envelope about a witness who saw them fill out the ballot wont have to complete a new ballot and locate another witness. A voter will just have to turn in an affidavit confirming they filled out the original ballot.

(10,303 posts)... by harvesting mail in ballots from likely Democratic voters and not turning those ballots in.
NC SBOE picked up on this by noticing a pattern - far fewer ballots that were sent out were returned.

(19,195 posts)I'm considering voting in person, which in my state is perfectly legal. In New York you only need a witness if you can't write your own name for some reason. They check the signature on the absentee ballot with the signature on record by the voter. I don't know why any state would require someone to fill out their ballot in front of a witness.

Title III: Uniform and Nondiscriminatory Election Technology and Administration Requirements - Subtitle A: Requirements - (Sec. 301)
[snip]
Creates an exception for a State or jurisdiction that uses a paper ballot voting system, a punch card voting system, or a central count voting system to meet such requirement by establishing a voter education program specific to that voting system that notifies each voter of the effect of casting multiple votes for an office and providing the voter with instructions on how to correct the ballot before it is cast and counted. Requires the voting system to: (1) produce a record with an audit capacity for such system; (2) be accessible for individuals with disabilities in a manner that provides the same opportunity for access and participation as for other voters; (3) provide alternative language accessibility pursuant to the Voting Rights Act of 1965; (4) comply with established error rate standards; and (5) operate according to a uniform definition of what constitutes a vote.
(Sec. 302) Provides for provisional voting by individuals who declare that they are registered to vote in a Federal election in a jurisdiction but who are not on the official list of registered voters or are otherwise alleged to be ineligible. Requires that: (1) such individuals be permitted to cast a provisional ballot; (2) the ballot be promptly verified and counted if determined to be valid under State law; and (3) the voter be able to ascertain whether the vote was counted, and, if the vote was not counted, why it was not counted.

(12,154 posts)North Carolina is one of only 12 states with this idiotic requirement. Ridiculous. Voting rules should be the same for every state!
Thanks to the ACLU for their work on this case.

They are making a big deal because its a swing state.
I am so fed up with this I could scream.
It is criminal that they actually try whatever means necessary to restrict voting.

(3,389 posts)When I here the words "trump's campaign" it hits me hard because I understand there are a group of people who do not care for their country, they are there supporting a traitor, a cheater, and all the ugly things that trump represents and is. I know that if I were working for his campaign that I would have resigned a long time ago, no matter how unintelligent you are, you have to understand that you are working for a traitor, a person who is damaging the country, who only has his self-interest in mind.
Its not that difficult to understand, is it?

Yea, the Trump campaign is a beacon of all that is good.
* I purposely omitted the part about the mental health issue because that certainly is not a voluntary act. I hope he gets the help he needs. And he should stay away from stressful stuff, probably for the rest of his life.

(8,756 posts)What they've always done.
Conservatives in the South cooked up the 3/5 rule and the Electoral College.
Conservatives cooked up Jim Crow and poll taxes.
Conservatives, to this day, fight for poll taxes, voter purges, and reduce the number of polling stations.
Conservatives, want the voting process as complicated to enroll and perform as possible.
Conservatives, you can ask any one you want, believe only "property owners" should be allowed to vote.
