Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict: Casualties mount in Nagorno-Karabakh
Source: BBC
Nearly 100 people, including civilians, have died as battles rage on between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The mountainous enclave is recognised as part of Azerbaijan, but has been run by Armenians since a war ended in 1994.
The self-proclaimed republic has reported 84 military deaths since Sunday, as well as civilian victims.
Azerbaijan has not revealed its military losses, but has confirmed seven civilian deaths.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have accused each other of launching attacks outside of Nagorno-Karabakh, with claims of one civilian death, as the UN security council said it would hold emergency talks to try to end the fighting over the contested region.
Armenias foreign ministry said one civilian was killed in the Vardenis after Azerbaijani forces shelled civilian-military infrastructure in the border town of Vardenis miles away from the breakaway territory. It also claimed a civilian bus in the town was set on fire by an unmanned drone.
Azerbaijans defence ministry had earlier accused Armenia of shelling the Dashkasan region, north of Nagorno-Karabakh a claim the Armenian foreign ministry denied.

Armenias ambassador to Russia said earlier that Turkey had sent around 4,000 fighters from northern Syria to Azerbaijan and that they were taking part in the fighting, the Interfax and RIA news agencies reported.
Rumours of militants from Syria allegedly being redeployed to Azerbaijan is another provocation by the Armenian side and complete nonsense, said the aide, Khikmet Gadzhiev.

Turkey says it will back Azerbaijan with all means necessary as fighting entered a second day Monday between Azeri and Armenian forces over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, in a sign the conflict could be widening.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quick to voice support for Azerbaijan, labeling Armenia "the biggest threat to peace in the region." The Turkish leader called on "the entire world to stand with Azerbaijan in their battle against invasion and cruelty."

"Turkey troops will not be on the front line, Azeri forces don't need them," said Turkish analyst Ilhan Uzgel. But Uzgel says Ankara remains Baku's key military ally.
"Turkey is already supporting Azerbaijan militarily," he said, "through technical assistance through arms sales, providing critical military support, especially in terms of armed drones and technical expertise. The line for Turkey's involvement, is Russia's involvement; actually, that is a red line for Turkey. Turkey doesn't want a direct confrontation with Moscow."

(101,271 posts)It's a war over where about 150,000 people live. No, there aren't huge natural resources, so at least Trump won't want to go in and steal something. Think of it as a war over a section of Vermont - it's about the same population density.

Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated that its air force does not have F-16 fighter jets. However, Turkey does.
