Incumbent United States President Donald Trump on Monday accused the US Food and Drug Administration and drug manufacturer Pfizer of withholding the announcement on Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the presidential elections in the country to deny him a vaccine win.
His comments came after Pfizer and German biotechnology company BioNTech on Monday announced that their coronavirus vaccine was more than 90% effective in phase three clinical trials.
In a series of tweets, Trump claimed that the had always maintained Pfizer and the others would only announce a vaccine after the election and that the US Food and Drug Administration should have announced it earlier, not for political purposes, but for saving lives.
He also claimed that the vaccine would not have been available for another four years, if Joe Biden were President.

(5,268 posts)and the way Pfizer was quick to strongly push back and emphasize they were apolitical and took no federal funds and debunked Pence's attempt to claim WH credit.

(23,145 posts)I wanted to liberate our scientists from any bureaucracy, Bourla said in an interview on CBSs Face the Nation on Sept. 16. When you get money from someone, that always comes with strings. They want to see how we are growing to progress, what types of moves you are going to do. They want reports. I didnt want to have any of that.
Basically I gave them an open checkbook so that they can worry only about scientific challenges, not anything else. And also, I wanted to keep Pfizer out of politics, by the way, Bourla added.

(258 posts)Now Trump cares about saving lives. How about the tens of thousands of deaths he is responsible for?

But why would anyone think he could claim any of that guesswork as some sort of personal victory, if one point he made amongst many, turned out to be true?
Pfizer has made it quite clear that their work was not funded by Trump, nor was it done to any timeline paralleling the election.
What next?
Trump predicts the Sun will come up tomorrow?
And it happens, so the Confused Deplorables take that as a Divine sign of the Infallibility of their Leader?

(738 posts)Good! It wouldn't have changed the outcome or timing of us getting vaccinated and it may have impacted the election.
Now, the Governor of Utah withholding a state-wide mask mandate until after the election . . . not cool at all! That actually may have gotten people killed. You don't hear trump complaining about that.

This was not preplanned as the paranoid sociopaths in the WH suggest
In addition, Pfizer did not take any funds from the government on this, and were not part of project warp speed. Trump trying to claim credit for this is just another lie from his deplorable reign

(50,261 posts)They owe Trump nothing and despite Pence emerging from under mother's skirt to say otherwise, they did not receive money from this government to develop a vaccine.

Sounds like Pfizer thought this through and made the correct decision.

(28,252 posts)Yeah, sure. We've got him on tape with Bob Woodward, saying different. And Pfizer has made it abundantly clear that trump didn't have jack shit to do with their research and development efforts.
I am so pleased that he'll take the timing of Pfizer's vaccine announcement to his grave as a source of unending frustration. I look forward to having that needle jammed in my arm (or any other location) in the not-too-distant future---trump can rest assured that I'll be thinking of his miserable ass when that happens. Fucking loser.
