Agencies told to plan Trump's next budget in another sign of election defiance

Source: Press Herald/WP

WASHINGTON — The White House budget office has instructed federal agencies to continue preparing the administration’s budget proposal for the next fiscal year, according to multiple administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details of private conversations.

The White House budget proposal is typically issued in February, which would be at least two weeks after President Trump is scheduled to depart the White House. He lost the Nov. 3 election to Joe Biden and Biden is set to be sworn in on Jan. 20, 2021, though Trump has refused to accept the results.

The decision to proceed with Trump’s budget for the 2022 fiscal year has rankled and surprised several career staffers given Biden’s victory in the presidential election, as well as the fact that the incoming Biden administration is expected to submit its budget plan to Congress early next year.

The insistence on budget planning, even though Trump won’t be in office to offer a budget in February, is part of a recent pattern of behavior from White House officials and senior political appointees that have shown a rejection of the election results.

Put cabinet members in front of a committee.
Make 'acting' heads of agencies embarrass themselves in front of committees.
Subpoena others. Make 'em sit and answer questions on the record.

Career civil servants don't like getting caught up in politics, and by and large dislike Trump anyway.

I wish to hell that these people would fucking stop being "rankled and surprised". He has been extremely consistent for the past 4 years at NOT following any previous traditions and conventions. They keep wishing and hoping and cajoling but it will NEVER happen.

They need to prepare plans for the fact that he won't follow protocol.

And I expect that since this wouldn't be due until February, they will slow-walk it and the clueless appointees will make up their own numbers.

If anything, all budgets are DOA when they hit Congress but they are used as tools by the various committees to determine what the priorities seem to be, and those will be calibrated and adjusted by Congress.

Raygun made quick work of them and it took 20 years to get the staffing and experience levels back to where they were before they were removed.

There isn't any reason for them not to start working on the budget. I'm sure it takes a couple of months for the different agencies to complete their budgets.
