Stacey Abrams says efforts against voter suppression made 'the difference' in Georgia

Stacey Abrams said on ABC’s "The View" on Thursday that her work fighting voter suppression was key to getting Georgia to turn blue in the presidential race.
“That fight is what I think helped make the difference because voters who wanted to be heard had the ability this time to actually make it through the gauntlet, get to the ballot box and cast their votes,” she said. “But this work did not happen overnight. It didn't happen over two years.”
Abrams has received much of the credit for Democrats' electoral successes in Georgia this election. The former Democratic leader in the Georgia state House rose to national prominence during the 2018 gubernatorial race, which she narrowly lost to now-Gov. Brian Kemp.
But Abrams and the voting rights organizations she founded, Fair Fight and The New Georgia Project, have been thrust into the spotlight again, having helped register hundreds of thousands of Georgians to vote and leading get out the vote efforts in The Peach State that have put Georgia in play for Democrats.

A lot of folks have complained about the inaccuracy of polls. Before the election, there were many stories noting the increased efforts by Republicans to suppress key sections of the electorate. For example, slow walking mail in urban, Democratic leaning areas, or limiting in-person ballot drop boxes and polling locations.
Republicans obviously believe that voter suppression has value, which is why they put so much effort into it. The question is how large of an impact? If we assume even a modest impact of 1 to 2 percent, then that is the difference between control of the Senate and winning several states.

Despite doing everything she could to cast a ballot, Wanda Kizzee was left out of the biggest election of her lifetime.
“It’s very frustrating because I felt like my right to be heard was stripped from me by no fault of my own. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to vote, or anything like that. I really wanted to vote, and it was just taken away from me,” said Kizzee, 55, a travel nurse whose ballot mailed to her by Harris County officials never made it to California, where she was working during the election. “This has never happened before, and I almost think it’s criminal that it did.”
Elections officials in Texas are wrapping up vote counts after record turnout, ending an election season rife with dueling accusations of suppression and unverified ballot fraud. With turnout numbers reflecting the nation’s interest in an election framed by the president’s response to an out-of-control pandemic, it’s easy to observe that Texas voters were able to vote in large numbers, with upwards of 11 million casting ballots.
But it’s also clear from calls to election hotlines, social media traffic and interviews with voters that a number of Texans, like Kizzee, tried to vote and couldn’t. The pandemic, fear, complex processes, missing absentee ballots, uninformed poll workers, technical issues, registration problems and other hurdles disenfranchised a number of Texans.
