U.S. Justice Alito Says Pandemic Has Led To Unimaginable Curbs On Liberty

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said the COVID-19 pandemic had led to “previously unimaginable” curbs on individual liberty, singling out restrictions on religious events. The justice, who is seen as a conservative, told a meeting of the Federalist Society late on Thursday he was not underplaying the severity of the crisis or criticizing any officials for their response.

But he added: “We have never before seen restrictions as severe, extensive and prolonged as those experienced for most of 2020.” "The COVID crisis has served as sort of a constitutional stress test," he said during his address over a video link for the conservative organization's annual conference. “Think of worship services! Churches closed on Easter Sunday, synagogues closed for Passover in Yom Kippur”, he said. “It pains me to say this,” Alito added, “but in certain quarters, religious liberty is fast becoming a disfavored right.”

The justice said freedom of speech was also under threat. “Although that freedom is falling out of favor in some circles, we need to do whatever we can to prevent it from becoming a second-tier constitutional right,” he said. Alito’s remarks on free speech echoed his words from 2016 at the same event when he referred to college campus culture that conservatives say stifles free speech to avoid offending political sensibilities on matters such as gender, race and religion.

Social norms had created a list of things that was now unacceptable for students, professors and employees to say, he added on Thursday. “You can’t say that marriage is a union between one man and one woman”, he added. “Until very recently that’s what a vast majority of Americans thought. Now its considered bigotry.”

Otherwise, McConnell will cause gridlock and refuse to cooperate on anything, including must-pass budget bills. He will bet that Biden would not shut down the government to get what he wants, and probably be right.

I know of no government agency that is limiting church services specifically because they are religious in nature. They are restricting them because it is a bunch of people in an enclosed space that causes a danger of spreading a deadly virus. It is that simple. I get real tired of people using their religion as a cover for ignoring the laws of this country. Do I think religious people should not be able to believe and practice their religions, no, but I do have a problem with them taking their personal beliefs, for example about same sex marriage, and then hiding behind their religion to cover up their bigotry. The idea of 'a strongly held religious belief' has been so stretched out of shape it has just become 'I am religious and I have strongly held beliefs therefore all those beliefs are religious'. Doesn't always add up to me.

Alito's wife leaves hearing room in tears

January 12, 2006 at 2:45 AM EST - Updated July 26 at 4:37 PM

(Washington-AP) Jan. 11, 2006 - At one point Wednesday, the wife of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito left his confirmation hearings in tears.

Martha-Ann Bomgardner has been sitting behind her husband for hours of questioning over several days.

But she left as Alito was being questioned by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
He asked the nominee if he is "a closet bigot." Alito said "no" and Graham responded "No sir, you're not."

Graham's question came following others by committee members about Alito's membership in a controversial Princeton alumni group that opposed the admission of women and minorities. He has said he doesn't recall anything about it.

Bomgardner returned to the hearing room after a committee break, smiling and holding her husband's hand.
