'Impeach Gretchen Whitmer' Petition Gains Support as Michigan Braces for COVID, Election Battles
Source: Newsweek
A petition calling for the impeachment of Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has gained traction in recent days.
The renewed activity with the Change.org petition, created months ago, follows Republican lawmakers introducing articles of impeachment on Thursday over Whitmer's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and ahead of Michigan's Board of State Canvassers meeting Monday to decide whether to certify the presidential electiona normally little-noticed process now under intense scrutiny amid claims of election fraud by President Donald Trump and state Republicans.
The petition, entitled "Impeach Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer NOW," calls Whitmer "incompetent" and "deadly" while accusing her of "inadequate" leadership during the pandemic. Concerns include "unnecessary government overreach" and fighting with President Donald Trump for "political clout." As of Sunday, it has reached over 7,100 signatures.
The petition calls for impeaching Whitmer over refusing to allow medical professionals to prescribe hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine to specifically treat the coronavirus. However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that this drug treats the virus. A March memo from Whitmer noted that an investigation would take place if medical professionals are caught prescribing the drug for treating the coronavirus, noting that an "intent to stockpile the drug may create a shortage for patients" who need it.

and from fakenewsradio.org 18 of the many michigan republican talk stations are limbaugh stations that depend on mich state 11 and u of mich 7 to keep broadcasting sports on them - they need those associations, or the lack of anyone making a stink about it, to keep attracting advertisers, or avoid losing them
this is a way for dems all over the country to target the republicans only unique advantage in any state

(16,982 posts)...unless the researchers happen to be Republicans and follow the science. See what The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine had to say about whether hydroxychloroquine was useful or not. (Spoiler alert: not.)
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanrhe/article/PIIS2665-9913(20)30390-8/fulltext
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2022926
The results suggest that patients in the hydroxychloroquine group were less likely to be discharged from the hospital alive within 28 days than those in the usual-care group (59.6% vs. 62.9%; rate ratio, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.83 to 0.98). Among the patients who were not undergoing mechanical ventilation at baseline, those in the hydroxychloroquine group had a higher frequency of invasive mechanical ventilation or death (30.7% vs. 26.9%; risk ratio, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.27). There was a small numerical excess of cardiac deaths (0.4 percentage points) but no difference in the incidence of new major cardiac arrhythmia among the patients who received hydroxychloroquine.
Most readable summary is from the National Institutes of Health.
https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/hydroxychloroquine-does-not-benefit-adults-hospitalized-covid-19
A National Institutes of Health clinical trial evaluating the safety and effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has formally concluded that the drug provides no clinical benefit to hospitalized patients. Though found not to cause harm, early findings in June when the trial was stopped indicated that the drug was not improving outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

I pray for the day all the repubs just plain go away. They are worthless, all they want to do is cause trouble and fight with The Democratic party.

(6,226 posts)but not by a big margin. They sued and the MI SC took away her power that had been in place since 1945. So she is using the MI Health Department to pass Covid rules. She did it that way because the repub run legislature wont pass Covid guidelines. In January the MI SC will be in Democratic Party control. I hope we see some positive changes.

Hopefully that petition doesnt gain much ground. Democrats need to go after those republicans trying to stop certification of Bidens win, interfering with democracy because they dont like the outcome of the legal election.

16 Dem
total 38 (two thirds of 38 is 25)
They would need 25 to convict. That means that all of the Republicans would have to vote for it and they would have to flip three Democrats to do the same.
Seems highly unlikely.

Big changes to recall process after right-to-work vote enrage Michigan Democrats
Updated Apr 03, 2019; Posted Dec 14, 2012
By David Eggert | deggert1@mlive.com
LANSING - Legislative Republicans early Friday approved big changes to the state's procedures for recalling elected officials, drawing withering criticism from Democrats who alleged it was an act of self-preservation in the wake of the passage of a right-to-work law earlier this week.
The legislation, approved 22-16 by the Senate around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, has a combined effect of making it more difficult to recall lawmakers, the governor and local officials, Democrats said. The GOP-controlled House, which approved an earlier version of the legislation last week, agreed with the changes on a 65-40 vote after 2 a.m. Friday.
One significant change would shorten the time to collect recall signatures from 90 to 60 days. Officials subject to recalls would have opponents instead of the existing system under which recall elections are an up-or-down vote.
snip
[and this is so ironic]
"Why are you making it more difficult to recall an officeholder?" said Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, days after the GOP quickly finalized a bill prohibiting unions from requiring workers to pay dues or fees as a condition of employment. "We are willing to work on this with you. Yet you jam it through in dark of night on the last night of a lame-duck session. ... You're trying to inoculate yourselves from a recall."
