ISLAMABAD (AP) Iconic singer and actress Cher is in Pakistan to celebrate the departure of Kaavan, dubbed the worlds loneliest elephant, who will soon leave a Pakistani zoo for better conditions after years of lobbying by animal rights groups and activists.
Because of security concerns, Chers schedule was not made public, however a Pakistani official with knowledge of her whereabouts said she was meeting Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday, and would no doubt visit Kaavan.
The elephant has languished in the zoo for 35 years, and lost his partner in 2012. He was diagnosed by veterinarians as both overweight and malnourished, and also suffers behavioral issues due to his isolation.
Kaavan is set to leave for a sanctuary in Cambodia on Sunday, said Martin Bauer of Four Paws International, a global animal welfare group thats led the charge to save him since 2016.

(14,164 posts)Like many world leaders enamoured with celebrity. They love to be seen with them, use their company for political purposes.
But obvioulsy nothing was done for decades for this poor creature. There had been years of lobbying. No leader had ever put any priority on animal welfare.
I applaud Cher for doing this, but something is wrong when it takes the popularity power of a celebrity to help to free these abused animal slaves.
