More than 500 children who were separated from their parents at the U.S. southern border during the Trump administration have not been reunited with their parents, lawyers for the parents say.
A committee of lawyers representing the parents said 322 of the 506 parents are believed to have been deported, according to NBC News, significantly complicating the reunification process.
Many of the parents agreed to be deported without their children in hopes that the children would be granted asylum, the lawyers said.
The estimated 506 children still not reunited with their parents is slightly down from Jan. 14, the last time the group of lawyers reported the status of the legal effort to a federal judge that is overseeing the cases.

(111,237 posts)How many parents are simply not looking? They could easily think their children would have a better chance at survival lost in the US instead of sent back home to Honduras or El Salvador or Guatemala to rejoin their parents.
The last administration had absolutely no plan to reunite children and parents. They didn't even note the names on the intake forms. The children were just objects to them, property to be confiscated with no plan to return it to the rightful owners.

(70,074 posts)if their parents were killed, they will need to id relatives.
back when this all started several of the major dna companies offered to do it for free. i hope someone remembers that.
i hope they either use several tests or get coordination from them. they are only as good as their databases.

(34,135 posts)The exact same story on NBC has the headline "Lawyers have found the parents of 105 separated migrant children in past month" which is a more positive slant and which got a lot of great response here on DU - https://www.democraticunderground.com/100215155130
No one was doing crap about it and now they have done this much in just a month.

(24,274 posts)That's 105 more than the Trump administration found because they didn't even try. Hell, they didn't even have a plan to try.

(9,967 posts)Either they have been living with relatives in the US who are afraid to come forward because they are undocumented or they have gone to foster homes or been adopted. I choose to hope that none were sold into sex trafficking, though that would have been something the Trump administration would have done.
It is just criminal that Trump did not bother tracking where these children were sent.

(14 posts)If the last adminstration kept any records of pandemic deaths of asylum seeking families and imprisoned minors, they were probably destroyed to cover up human rights violations.
