President Joe Biden said Friday that the United States will "never" accept Russia's annexation of part of Ukraine seven years ago.
"The United States does not and will never recognize Russia's purported annexation of the peninsula, and we will stand with Ukraine against Russia's aggressive acts," Biden said in a statement marking the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Crimea.
"The United States continues to stand with Ukraine and its allies and partners today, as it has from the beginning of this conflict. On this somber anniversary, we reaffirm a simple truth: Crimea is Ukraine," Biden said.
Russian troops seized the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine in 2014 and President Vladimir Putin then incorporated the region under Moscow's rule.

(8,020 posts)its own party in the US called the GOP could care less if we never accept what they do, as long as they keep getting away with it without being "really" punished they will keep doing it. Their GOP comrades are following the same playbook and getting away with it.

(8,203 posts)support for Ukraine and Crimea, should include "what do the people of Crimea want", if they are able to speak freely, enough information should have been gathered by now to form an action plan..does Crimea want back to Ukraine?..Does Ukraine want Crimea?..it is definitely an important strategic location to maintain..we'll see..
Basing my musing on what Biden is saying..

(972 posts)I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of people in Crimea support staying with Russia now. It's not the fake 96% or whatever they say but Russia has dumped a bunch of money into the region since occupying it. There has been a significant amount of construction and infrastructure improvement there notably the Kerch Strait Bridge. Russia has more money to spend than Ukraine does. The people there know that. There is also a predominant amount of ethnic Russians in the peninsula which further complicates matters.
What complicates it is that if you talk to a lot of Russians and they think that Crimea should be a part of Russia. They point out it became an official part of Russia under Katherine the Great in the late 18th Century. Crimea wasn't officially a part of Ukraine until the 1950s when it was given to them by the Soviet Union.
Don't take any of the above as condoning what Russia did. Just merely pointing out that the issue is complicated if you get into asking the people there what they want.
