Minneapolis To Hire 6 'Influencers' To Spread City-Approved Messaging To Public During Derek Chauvin

Source: WCCO News

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Minneapolis authorities are investing in six social media influencers, with a large local following, to help push their message and prevent riots during the murder trial of a fired police officer. On Friday, the Minneapolis City Council approved $1,181,500 for communication with the community during the trial.

The City says the six influencers will be intentionally targeting Black, Native American, Somalian, Hmong and Latinx communities with their messaging during the trial. Each influencer will be paid a flat fee of $2,000.

In a full statement from the Minneapolis City Council, they said:

The City is collaborating with social media partners to share public information with cultural communities and to help dispel potential misinformation during the upcoming trials of the former officers involved in the killing of George Floyd. The goal is to “increase access to information to communities that do not typically follow mainstream news sources or City communications channels and/or who do not consume information in English. It’s also an opportunity to create more two-way communication between the City and communities. The recommendations for which social media messengers to partner with come from the City’s Neighborhood and Community Relations staff. The agreements with the social media partners have not been finalized. The City is adhering to procurement requirements for the selection and contracting processes.”

Some activists and legal experts are concerned about this decision by the council.

The monk asked Jōshū,
“How is a dog like Buddha?”
Jōshū responded
By pushing him off a cliff!
How else could he have answered?

And George Floyd would have been spared.

"Well, Johnny got to do it".

Her response was, "If little Johnny jumped off a cliff, would you do it?".

Apparently, people who are influenced by "influencers" would indeed take that leap.

I live in Minneapolis and trust me we already know how we feel about the entire situation. Social Media at this point will make no difference.

There's a difference between Instagram influencers and YouTube creators.

Currently, the YouTuber who makes the most is 9-year-old Ryan Kaji. His channel is devoted to reviewing toys. Last year he made $29.5 million. "Follow your passion and let the money take care of itself" seems to hold true in his case. His channel is Ryan's World, and he has 28.7 million subscribers.

Influencers, not surprisingly, make their money from sponsors. They are paid a certain amount per post, so the more followers you have, the more you get per post. As an example, the second highest earner on the list is Ariana Grande, who makes an estimated average price per post of $391,530 to $652,550. A simple mention from her on her Instagram feed can help you reach her 165 million followers.

"What do you want to be when you grow up, Johnny?" "I wanna be an influencer." Go for it, kid!

a governmental entity decides to use social media stars instead of academics and legit journalists to offer their opinion on how to behave when those dangerous idiots get a mere slap on the wrist (or even worse, acquitted) shows me just how out of touch that governmental entity is. It also suggests to me that we are about to get yet another outcome that sensible people (you know, the ones that feel murder is not an acceptable police procedure, that mental health is not an excuse to shoot your dic.... sorry, your weapon around, and that the convenient 'I was in fear for my life' excuse, without offering proper evidence that it was, is just that, an excuse) are not going to like. But we will see. I live around St. Anthony and Falcon Heights, so I will be in ground zero once this latest travesty of justice occurs. Sure, I want things to happen differently. But I no longer look to the sky and daydream of a more equitable society because I have yet to see any evidence that it will ever even get discussed, much less come to pass. Especially when a city calls on the modern equivalent of Joe Isuzu/P.T. Barnum to be its spokespersons. (All due respect to David Leisure and the late P.T. Barnum).
