N. Carolina ban on Down syndrome abortions goes to governor

Source: AP

By BRYAN ANDERSON

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina senators approved a bill on Thursday to bar women from getting abortions on the basis of race, sex or a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

With the Senate’s party-line vote, the prohibition Republicans are seeking now heads to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who is likely to veto it, having rejected previous anti-abortion restrictions.

Abortion rights groups say the GOP-led bill, which was universally opposed by Senate Democrats and supported by only six Democratic House lawmakers, would prevent women from having open conversations with their doctors and deny their constitutional right to an abortion.

Abortions on the basis of sex selection are already prohibited in North Carolina. House Bill 453, approved in the Senate by a vote of 27-20, would expand and strengthen the existing law by requiring physicians to report, with a signed confirmation, that an abortion was not desired due to sex, race or the likelihood of being born with Down syndrome.

2. Thank goodness we have Gov Cooper.

Without him things would be very different around here.
Same goes for AG Josh Stein (D) and Democrats in the legislature. There are just not enough of them. Obviously.

3. Since the US govt. considers healthcare to be a luxury item,

are they planning on the state paying for the raising of Down's syndrome children?

4. What are the odds that NC also passed laws to help support these families?

I'm guessing: none.

5. I wish people would wake up to the fact that

ignorant bible beaters make absolutely rotten politicians. Down's doesn't just make a kid a slow learner, it can comewith catastrophic health issues and we still have no rational health care system, no support for working women, no real system in place for when these kids grow up, and abysmally low wages. That adds up to overstressed families and a lot of kids who could lead productive lives with help who fall through chasms, not cracks.

Those bible beating assholes need to fix those problems first. Then we'll talk about the ethics of aborting a healthy pregnancy when the fetus has Down's. It's still not their choice, though. We'll just talk about it.

7. But I bet they don't want to help support these kids or the parents who would be

forced to raise them.

8. State unfunded mandate

It's not just an economic decision but if they were serious about ending selective abortion in this case you would think they MIGHT consider making it easier for a parent without means to raise a downs kid.

The Lord will not provide.

11. And then they will treat the kids like garbage. I know, I have a daughter with

a genetic anomaly and have been accosted on the street in some states. Also a friend had a son with Down's and he died at the age of 21.From a heart defect. Down's doesn't just affect the brain. Like many other syndromes. My daughter has several physical problems in addition to mental retardation.

12. Once again,

Love the fetus, hate the child.

Politicians shouldn't be making decisions on a women's right to abortion at all, much less for a woman who feels she can not take care of a disabled child.
