Fauci Said It's 'Horrifying' That CPAC Attendees Cheered About The US' Lagging Vaccination Rate
Source: Business Insider
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the longtime director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Sunday he was horrified when attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) appeared to cheer about the US failing to reach its vaccination goal this month.
Video of a CPAC discussion at its second conference of 2021 in Dallas posted to social media appeared to show the crowd cheering on the US' inability to vaccinate most of its population.
"They were hoping -- the government was hoping -- they could sucker 90% of the population into getting vaccinated. And it isn't happening," said Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter who The Atlantic earlier this year dubbed "the pandemic's wrongest man."
Berenson was interrupted by cheers from the audience before he continued, claiming that younger people were avoiding getting vaccination because of potential side effects. "It's horrifying," Fauci said Sunday during an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union." "They are cheering about someone saying that it's a good thing for people not to try and save their lives,"...

.. In this crowded field of wrongness, one voice stands out. The voice of Alex Berenson: the former New York Times reporter, Yale-educated novelist, avid tweeter, online essayist, and all-around pandemic gadfly. Berenson has been serving up COVID-19 hot takes for the past year, blithely predicting that the United States would not reach 500,000 deaths (we've surpassed 550,000) and arguing that cloth and surgical masks can't protect against the coronavirus (yes, they can).
Berenson has a big megaphone. He has more than 200,000 followers on Twitter and millions of viewers for his frequent appearances on Fox News' most-watched shows. On Laura Ingraham's show, he downplayed the vaccines, suggesting that Israel's experience proved they were considerably less effective than initially claimed. On Tucker Carlson Tonight, he predicted that the vaccines would cause an uptick in cases of COVID-related illness and death in the U.S...

(128,488 posts)Maybe some organization like "Center for American Progress" (CAP) can help to host/sponsor some annual big shindig that can get media buzz and coverage, and then instead of their having a myriad of "little" topical discussion "events" through the year that get lost in the noise of the right, they can spend maybe 4 days doing those same discussions... inviting the rising stars of the Democratic Party, Working Families Party, etc., to participate/keynote along with the liberal/progressive elected officials and power brokers, and have at it with bringing our policies into the daylight - including being covered by someone like CSPAN.
Otherwise the media is NOT going to cover us, no matter how many podiums get pounded and feet get stomped unless and until there is some kind of "incident" between the more outspoken of the left and that of the right, or there is some "infighting" from within us. And in either of those cases, there's no "policy" message in any of it, just a gossipy reality show type of he said/she said substanceless reporting.

(1,242 posts)Even if the largest media outlets don't cover it, the opportunity must exist for those who will.
The biggest problem is that 'Culture Wars' should be covered correctly as 'Racist Agenda'. No adult minded individual thinks anyone is trying to cancel Christmas - the conservatives are fighting the inclusion of non Christian religions with the use of 'Happy Holiday' wishes.
The other culture fights oppose 'All men are created equal'.
BumRushDaShow
(128,488 posts)especially about calling the promotion of a racist agenda "Culture Wars", as if racists are somehow legitimate enough to be put on some kind of equal footing with those who are fighting hate and trying to uphold the spirit of the preamble of the U.S. Constitution that the racists claim to believe in (despite their also only recognizing 2 Amendments from the Constitution).

(128,488 posts)certain types of people only respond to certain types of stimuli, although you do get a few who manage to break free and use common sense. Many of that type are so embarrassed that they won't say anything "publicly" though, but they'll go on and vote "common sense" as we saw with the last election. The others are lost causes.

BumRushDaShow
(128,488 posts)self-flagellating about our "lack of messaging".
As a sidenote - I have seen the media generally attempt to cover -
-NAACP Annual Conference (which is going on right now - but virtually)
-National Urban League Conference (which is at the end of the month and virtual), plus whenever they release their annual "State of Black America"
What prompts media attention (and hand-wringing) for at least the NAACP one, is whether a current sitting President "attends", and if so, what they might say. However last week, Biden did meet with the heads of some of the largest civil rights organization to hear their concerns - https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/07/08/readout-of-president-bidens-meeting-with-leaders-from-legacy-black-civil-rights-organizations/
Because we have been doing "virtual" meetings/conferences, it seems the media has chosen to dismiss any meaningful coverage the past year.

(128,488 posts)that reported on a characterization by GOP anti-TFG Rep. Adam Kinzinger regarding what the RW loons do and he dubbed it "Outrage politics" - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142768167
And that is basically what the GOP "conferences" are designed to promote with the help of the media (that they mostly own). Whether it is done via "CPAC" or "Values Voters" or "Focus on the Family".
IMHO, that type of thing is bad for mental health (and cortisol levels) and I think this is why Democrats eschew that type of discourse.
Not long ago, there were outlets like "Move On" and "Occupy" that took up the mantle of elevating parts of our agenda up a few notches, using methods that gained media attention. But those organizations have sortof faded in the background and I expect there needs to be something along the lines of a "Lincoln Project" effort from our side to help with some countering and shifting attention, while we do what we do best - govern.
Of course there will always be those who disagree with our using their tactics to promote falsehoods that rarely if ever get called out by the M$M, outside of what they recently have started doing - inserting a boilerplate line of "so and so continued to repeat the falsehoods", while still dutifully repeating those GOP falsehoods as if they were "legit", and worth reporting.

maybe reading this in a bad mood has colored my thinking. But pardon me if I really dont give a flying fuck about these people anymore. You cant reason with them. You cant teach them anything. They are beyond reach.
Were rapidly approaching the point where we will have to protect the majority of society from these ignorant fools. Make vaccinations mandatory to rejoin ANY part of society. Then let these fools become isolated, and let them wallow in their victory.
But
there is the health care system, which will have to care for them. And those other patients who will need the medical resources that these ignorant, selfish people will use up
No neat and tidy solution here, but the enabling of this bullshit has to stop.
I really dont know why Fauci is so horrified at this. Nothing has really changed. They were all ready and willing to run out and hoard hydroxychloroquine (or whateverthefuck it was called) upon the endorsement of an illiterate con artist, and now they call the experts and scientists quacks. Same shit, different day. Sad, yes. Maddening, yes. Dismaying, yes. I am only horrified at the thought of them walking among us all the more reason for a mandate. This is no different from the old bromide of your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose.
