10 children on life support as Mississippi sees surge in delta variant cases
Source: wapt.com
JACKSON, Miss.
Concern about the spread of the COVID-19 delta variant is rising in Mississippi.
State health officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said in a tweet Tuesday that 12 children are in the ICU and 10 are on life support because of a surge in delta variant cases.
Dobbs also said that "pretty much" all cases in Mississippi right now are the delta variant. He said the vast majority of cases, hospitalizations and deaths are of people who are not vaccinated against COVID-19.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 219 new COVID-19 cases and 10 additional deaths on Tuesday, bringing the statewide total to 325,072 cases and 7,451 deaths since the pandemic began.

(21,346 posts)consider the high poverty rate and rural nature of Mississippi. Many people do not have access to vaccine sites. No car. No public transportation in rural, isolated areas. In such a red state, they cannot count on state or local governments or health systems to reach out to them or make vaccines readily available. This is especially true for the large number of African Americans in Mississippi, as well as for Asians and Latin Americans.
I blame the political leaders and the racist society there. This will affect people of color far worse than Whites.

(21,346 posts)If they have money for the luxury of buying something new.
If they have a reliable source of information to know how serious covid is, the need for a vaccine, and that it is safe to get vaccinated.
If it is available at any Walmart in Mississippi.
If there is a Walmart near them.

(21,346 posts)people who are not able to get vaccinated? You can be sure that I am not an advocate for that.
Clearly you don't understand the effects of poverty, both rural and urban.
I am optimistic that there are people who are caring and non judgmental.

(15 posts)They need to use some of those Homeland Security and FEMA fancy RVs and get out there to the people! This should be protocol in all under served rural communities in the country. Send local advocates along for the ride.

The MS Qgop might have just as well handed out smallpox blankets to its citizens.
Yup

(21,346 posts)reason why so few people in MS are vaccinated.
The eagerness on this thread to condemn the people and cheer their infections is disturbing. Is that what polarization has done to us? It's one thing to criticize stubborn covid deniers and anti vaxxers. But it is just damned cold to do it with people whose leaders have not made vaccines or vaccine info available to a large number of persons in tbe state.

(1,666 posts)...and red states would not do allow it (which is where most of the unvaccinated are at) and red gun voting voters would consider it an attack on their homes; then the shootings at those coming to kidnap their children would start; sanctioned by the red states.
Not happening. And the military isnt allowed to do the job of the cops.

(70,092 posts).............Even though much of the nation has made progress with vaccinations, Mississippi lags behind most other states. The percentage of the states population that is fully vaccinated is 33.4 percent, according to Our World in Data.
On Tuesday, the State Department of Health reported 219 new cases of COVID-19 and 10 new deaths.
Dobbs tweeted on Monday that almost all current COVID-19 cases in Mississippi are the Delta variant, and that hes worried that seven percent of recent COVID deaths were vaccinated people.

(3,334 posts)we still wear our masks, not for ourselves, but for our great-grandchildren who can't get the vaccine yet. If you are around children then you should still be wearing a mask. It is a lot easier putting on a mask than a bra, but I still wear a bra.

If we were like Mississippi, we'd have something like 25k deaths.

(3,378 posts)children has to be criminal and has to be a reason for indictment.
I compare it to someone convincing someone else to jump from the top of a building, if you do it you are guilty of murder, why should this be any different?
If I were the parent of one of those children I would begin looking for good lawyers to sue all those people in government who have misguided them to avoid the vaccine just to make political points, and find out if those politicians have been vaccinated themselves.

(21,346 posts)that contribute to the vax problem in Mississippi.
A lot of isolated, rural poverty means no access to vaccone sites. No cars. No rural public transportation.
Red state government that makes no effort to reach out to people in rural areas.
Red state that puts people of color last in health care. Large population of African Americans in Mississippi. They are the ones who will suffer most, first from lack of access to vaccines, then from lack of health care once they get sick.
Just as Biden sent vaccination teams to Missouri, it might be a good idea to send teams into Mississippi.

(7,404 posts)A large portion of their population is obese, so much more susceptible to COVID. That applies to both white and black people there and is probably the largest risk factor.
