'Pandemic of the unvaccinated': COVID-19 deaths up 26% over previous week in U.S.

The delta variant of COVID-19 is now the dominant strain worldwide and is driving a surge of deaths around the United States, almost entirely among unvaccinated people, U.S. officials said Friday.
Cases of COVID-19 are up 70 per cent over the previous week and deaths are up 26 per cent, with most of the surge occurring in counties with below average vaccination rates, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said during a news briefing.
"This is becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated," Walensky said, adding that 97 per cent of people entering hospitals in the United States with COVID-19 are unvaccinated.
According to the officials, four states account for 40 per cent of the rise in cases, with Florida alone accounting for one in every five new national cases over the past week.

(26,035 posts)When each of six members of the Yankees, all vaccinated, test positive after returning from the All-Star Game, you have to ask yourself if theres a new Delta-plus variant that the vaccines simply dont prevent.

(14,250 posts)The stats predicted this. there will be breakthrough infections at a small rate and hospitalizations and deaths at a much smaller rate.
Best not to jump to conclusions based on points of data.

"vaccinated"? Would that be a full two doses?

(17,781 posts)but the probability of becoming sick and / or transmitting the virus to others is vastly reduced. The virus invades. Your immune system is primed to respond and destroys the virus relatively quickly.

(17,781 posts)Even without a "delta plus" variant, those who are vaccinated CAN TEST POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS. It's not a magic bullet. In the vast majority of cases, those vaccinated won't even know they were infected. A very small percentage may have mild symptoms. An extremely tiny fraction may have serious symptoms. Your chances of dying are less than being struck by lightening. All vastly less than the same probabilities for people WHO AREN'T VACCINATED. The point is, vaccines dramatically slow the transmission of viral pathogens. Slow the chains of transmission to the point where they cannot find enough hosts to maintain an epidemic and they eventually die out.
Now....sorry, but I've got to do this. No offense.

(17,378 posts)...yes, they do significantly reduce the risk of infection, but the main benefit is that vaccines significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization and death such that over 95 percent of folks who are hospitalized due to COVID are unvaccinated.
